High Noon somewhere in the Mid-West. An illustrious crowd of shady-lurid characters, somewhere between Spaghetti-Western-protagonists and Rango-puppets is having a wild party in broad daylight in the local saloon. All of a sudden an unholy bunch of undead bandits kicks in the revolving door, and starts a massive shoot out.
What sounds like the beginning of a cheesy B-movie is a wild ride, that was created for the first single “Daniel” of Deluxe´s debut album “The Deluxe Family Show” some months ago. On the 20 th of September the French Band from Aix-en-Provence released their latest creation of their unique understanding of artistic expression.
And indeed: Again, they are releasing a beast of a record. Expect nothing less than an eclectic trip through genres and styles, always held together by the singer/rapper Liliboy, who´s apparently a girl with a weakness for moustaches, like the rest of the band, with boundless energy on stage. It´s catchy, always. It´s funky, often. It´s laid-back, from time to time.
Although being enrooted in organic HipHop the six-piece-band refuses to be put in any kind of drawer. Especially Pietre, the guitarist, shows his wide range of skills and influences by playing discofunk-influenced licks(“My Game”), relaxed finger picking(“Pretty Flaws”, “Indisposed”), folky bonfire chords(“To doop”), or heavy riffs(“Daniel”). As if this weren´t enough, Deluxe invited some dear friends, most of them rappers, like Taiwan MC or Youthstar who added further colourful ink splashes. The extended family, like Deluxe, gathered at the bustling “Chinese Man Records”, allows to classify the record as HipHop, although it´s just the tip of the iceberg or the groundwork for this remarkable creation.
All in all, “The Deluxe Family Show” occurs as an anarchistic conglomerate of 60 years of music history-the consistent continuation of their aware or unconscious attempt of bringing together different decades and styles of music.
Absolutely worth listening to!
