Another stunning release by Leeds indie label Cuckoo Records. Electro Swing star Cissie Redgwick new EP comes out on Valentines Day (14th of Feb 2014). Currently Home for 2 Weeks before going back out on the road it’s the ideal time to catch her for an interview…
Hello Cissie! Welcome on electro-swing.com :)
Can you please introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello electro-swing.com. Im Cissie Redgewick. Very pleased to meet you..
Your real name is Rosie, right? Where does Cissie come from?
Cissie Redgwick was my Grandmothers name. I had always thought it was great name for the stage so I started writing in this style it seemed like the perfect opportunity.
I heard you were intended to become an actress… so what drove you into music? Tell us about your relation to music.
My family are all musicians so I spent my youth at gigs and festivals that my relatives were performing at. I am part of a huge family and we went everywhere together. We were always encouraged to perform or do something creative with our holidays which usual meant play acting or singing. I started a performing arts class at college and my teacher realised before I did that my talents lay in music as opposed to drama. I have a lot to thank her for!
You’ve been touring with Peter Gabriel and Birdy! Amazing experiences?
Absolutley! The PG tour was my first big gig so it was incredibly exciting but also terrifying. I sang ‘Don’t Give Up’ with Peter which for me was obviously the highlight of those gigs. Peter is an amazing persons he always made me feel so comfortable so however nervous I was I somehow managed to pull it off:)
I am currently on tour with Birdy, I am writing this from a backstage room at The Olympia in Paris. This tour is really good fun and we are all very good friends. We have a long tour ahead but every gig is an amazing experience and everyone is different from the last.
Are you involved in other musical projects or are you 100% Cissie Redgwick focused?
I have quite a few other projects. My taste in music is rather eclectic so I like to write in as many styles as possible. I have my band Rose and The Howling North which is a little like Nancy Sinatra, I have another band CryBabyCry which has sounds of The Black Keys and some folky stuff that I like to write at my leisure when I’m on the road.
Why did you choose Swing? Name few artists you admire.
My Grandma loved the Andrew Sisters and listened to them in the car on long journeys so inevitably I loved them too. I know this isn’t necessarily swing but The close harmonies and swirling melodies were quite intoxicating for me at that young age and it made me dream of what the old days might have been like.
What do you think of the Electro Swing craze happening right now all over the World?
I am all about retro so I’m so happy its making a resurgence. It has so much life and so much energy that gigs and electro swing events make for the best nights out.
Amazing video clip. Was good fun making?
It was great fun. All the dancers were amazing, it was freezing cold in the middle of winter but they never complained they just got on with the job. The producer/director of the video Dalit, did an incredible job. she worked so hard on this video and it has most definatley paid off.
It was so much fun dressing up, the clothes were beautiful and perfectly picked out I thought.
The quality of the production is great. Are you a singer only on this project or are you involved in production to? Do you have your own musicians? Do you write music yourself, write your own lyrics? Tell us about your collaboration with Cuckoo Records.
The initial writing session with Bob and Stevie from cuckoo was us just jamming round some chords. Once we had the bare bones of something that sounded like the base of a track we listened through again and I came up with a few different ideas for the melody. They were there to tell me which worked and which didn’t. We then went our separate ways and Bob worked on the production which I was amazed with, I loved what he had done with it. I then wrote the lyrics and went into record all the vocals. Yes mine is the only vocal on the track, i love harmonies so i didn’t feel like I needed anyone else.
I couldn’t help falling in love with you watching the video! It’s killing me! Why a release date on Valentine’s day?
It was Phil (my manager) idea to out it out on this date. Its been a long time coming so as it was the month of february it seemed like as good a time as any.
Its a shame its not about people falling in love really. I suppose that would have been more apt.
Thank you for the questions. Hope you all enjoy the song.
Lots of love.
