Once upon a time, Kiss me Yesterday was in love with a dandy stick and a love song and danced the night away
Can you describe yourself ? Who is Kiss me Yesterday ?
Kiss Me Yesterday is a trio who loves swinging beats! We love to bring this fusion on stage and move the audience with our energy.
When did you start to make music? What is your musical adventure ?
Paul: I visited a Jazzfestival in 2012, there I heard a band, in which Hela was the lead singer. I loved her vocals, so I approached her after the show and suggested that perhaps ,we can work on some electro tracks together. The rest is history, we’ve been working perfectly together since then.
Our first gig was small and intimate … Lisa was in the audience and she loved our sound and asked us if she could jam to some tracks. This was the beginning for Kiss Me Yesterday.
What drove you in to electro swing ?
It was the only logic musical consequence of mixing us three… a constellation of all our backgrounds and yeah, boom – that was it!
What is electro swing for you?
Exciting, fun, energetic and musically satisfying. It’s happy music. Listening to it puts you “in the mood” to shake your hips and just enjoy the beats, it’s a voyage back to the old school. Swing(as described by a big band) is really good entertainment on a high level, but still easy to listen to. This is Electro Swing too, just with electro beats and deconstruction of samples. Even our parents, who normally don’t like “electronic music” do love to swing to our music.
What did your parents listen to when you were young?
Oh funny, somehow our parents do have a big part in this interview ;).
Hela: Yeah, mine always liked to listen to Austrian folklore and to Austrian and American singers and songwriters. My mum always loved touching German lyrics sung e.g. by Herbert Grönemeyer, while my father also loved a lot of foreign artists like Joni Mitchell or Simon & Garfunkel.
Lisa: I remember the times, when my father and I were playing table tennis in the cellar while listening to Blood, Sweat & Tears, jazz records from Cannonball, Adderley or Jazzradio.
You are sampling a lot of jazz and swing music. What kind of jazz fan are you? Who is your jazz favorite artist ?
Hela: Chet Baker means a lot to me. In my opinion he was a wonderful soloing vocalist (and trumpet player). I find him to be a very delicate and intimate singer – just wonderful. My swingy influence comes from Ella Fitzgerald, of course. I love to sing very intimate and soft, but with Kiss Me Yesterday I always look for my swingy, strong vocal side.
Lisa: Phew that’s a hard question…there are so many artists I admire and love to listen to. My first jazz-record was from Charlie Parker. But at the moment I’m very into contemporary jazz like: James Farm, AlasNoAxis, Edouard Bineau, Eric Harland, Wayne Shorter, Joe Farrell, Avishai Cohen, Vienna Art Orchestra…to name only a few. Oh and not to forget my role model John Coltrane.
What’s in your studio? How do you make music?
Paul: I work on a MacBook Pro with Ableton Live 9 and a Focusrite AI, combined with some controllers (NI Machine, Akai APC 20, Master keyboards…). I really love that my Studio is also portable.
Usually I create a foundation with beats and base combined, then add in some swing samples and I send rough arrangements to the girls. They start to record vocal and sax parts, send them back to me and then the amazing track is finished. Well, if it would be so easy ;)
What is the right balance between live musicians and sample?
The swingy samples give us the possibility to put some real vintage flair into our music but since the core elements of our sound are the voice and the live played saxophone, our electro swing music definitely has it’s individual style and doesn’t live just by samples.
Could you tell us more about your first EP ?
We think it’s just wonderful! But get it and make up your own picture! ;)
Honestly, it’s colorful. It perfectly shows the versatile styles of our music. You can hear some old skool samples and patterns, but also fresh new lines. The songs have one common basis → they motivate you to dance!
Who would you love to work with one day?
There are a lot of great electro swing artists we would love to work with. If we think on an international level, we really like the Swingrowers and Caravan Palace. In the near future we will try to work on a remix with Incontrol.
How do you transpose your studio work on stage?
Since we are a live-band it is easy for us to transpose our productions to a live concert. We follow some song structures, but we love to improvise and try new stuff on stage, inspired by the atmosphere of the location and the audience..
What is your next project for 2013 ?
Of course we are already working on new songs. But we are especially happy to collaborate with some excellent young movie producers and we are going to release a cool music clip in a nobel vintage villa very soon! This is a big big thing ;)
Finally, do you have one specific memory of your artistic career you would want to share with us?
After a gig far, far away we wanted to travel a distance of 400 km at night. Yes, we thought we had enough petrol in our car tank. As it goes, we were happily singing along to music while thinking and hoping for a gas station. After a while we stopped singing and started worrying! There was just darkness and a rough road with no infrastructure.
Gladly, after taking the last possible exit we literally rolled into a gas station, with just 1 drop of petrol left…
