So when they released their last L.P SuperSrunk on Banzai Lab, i know i need to make an interview with this fellas.

Once upon a time, Dirty Honkers … created the univers, and the mountain goat, and they saw that it was awesome.

Are you crazy ?

Gad : yeHA HAHAHA no…  gesundheit.
Flo :  We walk the fine line between crazy and edgy.

What makes you different from everyone else?

We are 100% DIY , the music we put out is unique, our show is a high energy flick, sometimes hard hitting but always colorful. Thanks to Andrea’s costume-making skills, we always look very special on the stage and in our videos. We manage to keep the electro alive. An other particularity of the Dirty Honkers is that we are from totally different places, all aliens inhabitating the planet Berlin with completely different musical backgrounds.

Could you tell us more about your new L.P ?

Gad: we have been playing some of these songs for about 2 years, so they have been carfully crafted over time to deliver our essence in the form of a studio album, its kinda hard to capture what our live show is like, so  I think we did a pretty decent job of that.

Flo:  this album is a big step for us as it defines our sound in a more electronic direction with a much higher-hand production. It’s a real trip that goes to many different places, we have some swing influences of course but also Boogie, Afro or even Latin vibes. The production of the electronic part has  its own touch  with some acid stabs and fat rhythmic, it’s fresh and not-clean like we like it!

How did you make the connections with your label, Banzai Lab ?

Flo :  I’m from Bordeaux and have  known these guys for ages. We had music projects together and we grew up on similar musical grounds so they were the first label I could think of when we started looking for partners. They also strongly value the relation between acoustic and electronic music and have major hip hop influences. Their support was always a great confort, they are true friends for sure!

Do you  have a some guests on your album ?  How did you make all these connections ?

We were very lucky to gather some very fine musicians who dedicated their time to make this album sound so kickass.  Most of these fellas are friends and are part of our scene here in Berlin where we all played in numerous projects even before the Honkers started. We also reached out to the french side to get some exclusive and fresh sounds. 

Could you tell us something about each guest ?

On the trumpet we had the amazing Nacho straight out from Cuba who braught us a hot and screaming trumpet on a couple of Big Band sections. To back him up we asked our good friend Gal Bar Adon founder of  the well-known UK Dubstep band JazzSteppa to blow some trombone lines. For the latin vibe raphael Perrein on the congas and Louis Abado on the timbales, two fellas from back in days and very involved with Banzai Lab who spiced up the track , Get on it. our brazilian friend Seraphin Also recorded some percussions to add to the overall tribal sound.

For the tune Dirty Looks we wanted a really jazzy touch and  Nicolas Cerezuelle turned out being the man! He’s active in Paris with his band Union Special, a really hot south-african Jazz combo.  For the  final urban touch on that track, we were lucky enough to have Senbei from Smokey Joe & the Kid to squeeze a session for us, it brought the old school flavour the track needed.

Could you tell us more about your new video you posted in the last days ? 

Static is the ultimate music video format we put out for the release of the album. Basically we wanted to mix music and acting since all three of us always have a lot of fun in front of the camera. So we came up with a scenario involving all three of us and our alter egos: the Super Honks. The Music video was pretty ambitious so we asked our video producer Paul Ohmert to get his hands on it and Manuel Graubner to direct the shoot, they put a super team together and Paul found the perfect bad guy by asking the great photographer Oliver Rath to play the role. It looks amazing! We are very proud that it came out so well. Of course you should watch the whole trilogy to really get the music video

 Who are your inspirations? Who would you love to work with one day?

Gad: We would love to do colaborations with big names in the jazz world.. as for insperations, we usualy try to avoid sounding like anybody specific, we do however love boogie woogie, film noir scores, hip hop, african polyrhythms, and 90’s eurodance P..p.ppp..POP!!
Flo: Yeah, some jazz musicians would be interesting. I mean ultimately it would be great to have a 10 piece big band! And besides musical collaboration we would love to rock the stage with a huge show involving dancers, super  video screening and fireworks!

What is your agenda for 2013 ? Touring ? How will your new live show work?

We have a couple of improvement on the go and we will try some of them out for our Berlin release party where we will guest some super cool dancers and our dear Gal Bar Adon from JazzSteppa  on the trombone. After that we will be touring Europe, mostly Germany and France but also Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland.  We are working on a short tour in Israel in September and after that we’ll see, Canada, the UK and Japan are definitly on top of the list!
We also want to put out a couple of remixes as a follow up to the album just to keep our DJ friends busy.

Do you have one specific memory of your artistic career you would want to share with us?

Gad: i was really sick one night and did a whole show l laying on the floor and puking on the plant on the stage, the audience didnt even notice i think,.
Flo: Haha, yeah I remember, that was such a mess! I personally remember stage diving after a super punky tune and landing right on the one Girl Gadi was eying the whole concert. She had to leave the party with a black eye and probably a death wish on me..

Who were your heroes when you were young?

Flo: Batman (The cartoon character from the 90’s, not the movies)
Gad: indiana jones..this belongs in a museum!!!

It’s been two years since they hit the scene with their unique fusion of hiphop- swing with bass music. They have a variety of amazing guests on this project that I’m very happy to see like Puppetmastaz, Youthstar and more, and some Montréal artists like Waaahli, Lou Piensa (Nomadic Massive) and Random Recipe. This is the true hip-hop swing, fans will not be disappointed!

Let’s have some words with my  swing brothers from Bordeaux…

How are things since the last time we met in Montréal last summer for Piknik Electronik ?

Since last summer, we’ve been producing our debut album “Nasty Tricks”, recording voices, mixes, cutting, scratching, do, redo, undo… listening mixes until we die, etc. Producing music is quite much harder than robbing a bank! We also played several gigs.
We really like this city even in winter. Summer or winter, it’s always WARM—the people and the city ! My best moment was when we played at Piknic Electronique Festival in front of 4000 ravers.

What drove you in to hiphop and swing ?

The Kid :  I opened the door of my first music class 20 years ago… And since, I studied guitar and drums. And then, 10 years ago, I bought 2 turntables, cause it looked fun! And I also started to make some electronic music… With a Playstation… We got to this current project because of our musical inspirations. I’ve been listening a lot of kind of music, for heavy metal to video games soundtrack. And at the time we created Smokey Joe & The Kid, we really wanted to work more on the jazz/hip-hop direction. Because, we dig the idea of the mix old/new, /electronic/Instrument, etc… And this is two different times, but so many similar elements…

Smokey Joe : I grew up with Jazz. My parents played piano and drums in jazz bands. I began with the sax when I was a child for 7 years. Then, I played Bass in a reggae band. I discovered electronic music through a nice label that you must know…. Amon Tobin, Bonobo, Kid Koala (He’s speaking of Ninja Tune Records).

Who were your heroes ?

Smokey : Commandant Cousteau. Babar.

The Kid: Danny Elfman !! And Amon Tobin. (And Batman too !)

Could you give us a review of 2012 ?

Tuff year! More than 20 000 kms covered by planes, boats, crazy drivers. A lot of gigs, festivals in several countries. Istanbul, Berlin, New York, London, Montreal, San José. Such great moments all around the world.

Could you tell us more about your first L.P ?

It’s the result of two years of work and collaborations with people we met on the road. We are very proud to annonce that artists such as Puppetmastaz, Lateef or R.wan are part of the project.

You have a lot of guests in your album. How did you make all these connections ? Did you meet them in person, or did you just send them your tracks ?

We met Random Recipe and Nomadic Massive when we first came in Montreal. For Puppetmastaz, it was on a big french festival, But because we knew we were playing with them, we’ve sent them a track before the festival. Youthstar is a friend of us since a long time, and we really like Sugaray and Lateef so we contacted them on the internet and recorded them at the studio, using the time they were spending in France for their own tour.

Could you tell us something about each guest ?

Puppetmastaz : The most dangerous team ever. Be carefull of their energy.
R-Wan: He is mad! A freakin’ Gangsta, he is the Shakespeare of the Molière Language.
Waaahli and Lou Piensa (Nomadic Massive): Insanely dope! We always look after new tracks of the crew.
Erica Guaca & Youthstar: Hot couple! Great artists and friends.
Random Recipe: A lovely & warm Jazz voice for Frannie, and a flow that should make the Beasty Boys crazy for Fab. Their live show is awesome too.
Lateef the Truthspeaker: He is really versatile, he can switch his voice from an MC flow into a really Soul / Rn’B voice. A damn good singer. We know and listen to him since so many years…
Sugaray: A real crooner, you can’t imagine how his voice is powerful. He’s a real blues man.

Who are your inspirations? Who would you love to work with one day?

Smokey: We’ll be glad to work again with the same collabs but also Snoop Dog, Mike Skinner, Busta Rhymes, Roots Manuva, Rizzle Kicks… ODB, 2 Pac ;), Ceza could also do a nice job….
The Kid: doing a track with Kid Koala and John Williams would be bad-ass !! (And Bruce Wayne rapping on it…)

What is your agenda for 2013 ? touring ?

We will release “Nasty Tricks” on Banzai Lab in April, then we’ll begin our “Nasty Tour” at this period.

How will your new live show work?

We met Miss Chemar 6 month ago, she is a V-J artist and also a Dj. She plays with audio and videos on live acts since 10 years. We begun to work together on this new concept, trying to bring some images to our music. We can’t tell you exactly how it goes, cause there’s a lot of surprises on it, but we can tell that the three us had some crazy times doing it; tons of work, lot’s of fun and laugh. It is hard to do, it´s like making a movie, and we are more than proud of what we did together.

Can we North Americans expect to see you on this side of the Atlantic Ocean sometime soon?

Smokey Joe: Definitely! We’ve been lucky that our music spread like a cigar smokes there, so it’s just a matter of time before we come again.

The Kid: We have already been there, and we’ll come back for sure. American people are very receptive to our music. Because most of hip hop and jazz culture come from you guys, so it’s always a pleasure to play in front of you, and give you back what we made with your stuff!

Do you have one specific memory of your artistic career you would want to share with us?

Smokey: To meet Jamel Debbouze in his club was really funny.
The Kid: My best memory, and it will probably stay my best one forever, was me playing with DJ Krush in Bordeaux, France. He let me scratch with him for 5 minutes at the end of his show, in front of his audience. Crazy moment…

I wasn’t sure how this music would go over with the crowd but it seemed to be a big hit and the dancefloor broke open and stayed full throughout my set.

There was hand-clappin, foot stomping, screams and shouts of joy and hands in the air (can’t ask for more than that!)… oh yeah there was a gravity defying pole dancer for the first track, that always helps :)

What is Electro Swing / Electro Blues for you ?

Electro-Swing to me, and really Electro-Blues for this mix in particular, is that nice combination of super huge bass whomp or at least modern production technics with some classic or retro melodies.

I also love playing more traditional electro-swing or blues with less modern sounds and less bass but every now and then its great to get a chance to drop a super huge bass heavy set at a venue that wants exactly that. Luckily Electro-Swing and Electro-Blues has enough range to allow all of that diversity to fit under a big tent of awesomeness!

He is an experimental hip-hop and trip-hop producer who demonstrates a lot of variety in styles through his work. His last E.P Chains round my legs just came out with featuring from mc’s from Paris, NYC, Accra (Ghana), Toronto, Brighton, Miami and Cleveland.

Who are you Dead Horse Beats ?

Well, basically I’ve been involved with music and performance for quite a long time. I played in bands all throughout middle school and high school. I used to play drums in a funk band, and dabbled with guitar as well. Then when I went away to university I didn’t really know anybody and I couldn’t play in any bands; so I started to get into hip hop. At the start I was rapping and just looping old funk songs or psych rock songs for beats. I went by Illfrid Laurier during this time, but after a couple years of not getting any respect because I’m a nerdy white guy, I just started to focus on making beats. I gave up the rhymes and just set out to learn every detail of Cubase while I was working in a really small town in Eastern Canada called Rocky Harbor. I was living in a 5 bedroom house by myself and was the only person in town under the age of 30. So I basically locked myself in the house when I wasn’t at work and set out to learn some skills on the instrumental front.

One day… Valentines day around 3 years ago I decided that I was going to change my name to disassociate myself from the rapping aspect and I thought, hey why not “Dead Horse Beats” what white college kids don’t try to be DJs and hip hop producers; at this point it’s really beating a dead horse.

Choosing this name really turned out to be a kind “B Sharps” moment. I really liked for about a year and now I really don’t like it at all but it’s too late to change it… haha.

What drove you in to abstract hiphop ? Who were your heroes ?

A guy called Edan is the reason why I started to make hip hop. When he put out Beauty and the Beat in 2005 it really opened my eyes to a whole other possibility in the way hip hop could sound. I wanted to do that kind of thing. It was a really life changing record for me. Aside from Edan, I’ve always been a huge fan of guys like RJD2, Cut Chemist, Dilla, Caribou, Bonobo and 20syl from the French groups Hocus Pocus and C2C.

How would you describe your music?

I guess, at it’s core it’s instrumental hip hop with some pysch and some electronica in there as well. I like to sample a really wide variety of stuff but always give it that dense, epic, psych sound that I think is characteristic of a DH B.

Could you tell us more about your last L.P ?

Sure. My last record was called Stop, Thief! It was the product of a friend of mine stealing thousands of dollars of my instruments, records and equipment. I had all these loosie beats laying around that I had been working on for no specific project and had been planning on releasing them for some time. This event really was the catalyst for the release of the album, because obviously I wasn’t in very good financial standing after having a tonne of my stuff stolen.

The record ended up getting to the top 3 best selling albums on bandcamp 3 times over the span of the last 3 months. So that was pretty awesome. Big shoutouts to Ryan for breaking my trust and stealing all of my stuff.

Who would you love to work with one day?

Oh man… so many people. My homie L’Orange just released a record with Blu on it. It would be amazing to work with him. Some of my other favorite rappers that I’d love to producer for… 1995 (from Paris), Edan… Ghostface would be a dream come true. Strangely enough – and I really mean this – I would love to produce a track for Lil B.

What is your agenda for 2013 ? touring ? How will live show work?

I have a couple of releases planned for 2013. I’m just finishing up an album called Chains ‘Round My Legs which I’m really excited about. It’s a collection of songs sampled from 1920s chain gang work songs of the deep south and features rappers from Paris, NYC, Accra (Ghana), Toronto, Brighton, Miami and Cleveland. It’s going to be extremely fantastic and I can’t wait to drop it. I’m also working on an EP with the homegirl Khali Carela. She’s a 16 year old singer with an amazing voice. I’m going to be making beats for her and we’re going to be putting that out somewhere down the line.

In terms of touring: I’ve only really started to play live in any kind of serious way in 2013 and it’s been going amazing. I played a show in Montreal for around 600 people with xxyyxx that got a great response. Now I’m playing with Rustie in March in Montreal and a couple more dates in Halifax and Toronto with some BIG things planned for the spring and summer that I can’t really discuss right now. But touring is definitely in the plans.

Do you have one specific memory of your artistic career you would want to share with us?

Probably the best night of my life in music so far was when I finished playing with xxyyxx and people wanted to have their pictures taken with me and wanted high 5s and stuff. It seemed really surreal, and was kind of a culmination of everything I have been working for since I started doing this as a job.

Hello, can you introduce your project “Stranger Danger”?

Stranger Danger is just about my love for house music. I think initially the name was supposed to be a play on how as kids we are taught to fear strangers and be wary of them…and then we never really un-learn that to a certain degree as adults and move into a more excepting and open mind frame. I think that’s kind of funny and sad, but in the end I just decided the named sounded cool to me so I stuck with it.

How do you see your music?

I see my music as really fun and not too serious. I think that’s why I gravitate towards the Swing genre because it is so fun and light hearted compared to what we may have on the radio nowadays. I guess it could have been considered the pop music of the 20’s and 30’s but it was just so much classier. Makes you feel good and gets your body moving.

You’ve followed the house music scene for a while, you’ve been a dancer, a promoter, a dj, and now into production, this has probably given you a special look and feel about the scene, correct?

Yes, I think I’ve been around for a bit, since 1991. Most of my good friends are “retired ravers” who graduated to House music once we turned 21. To us it was a whole new thing at the time since we were so used to dancing all night to Breakbeat. I found House music refreshing, musical and uplifting.
I’ve seen the scene go through all sorts of incarnations over the years and now be picked up under a whole new generation under the EDM moniker. Change is the one constant in life. Always popular media has taken from the underground scene and rehashed things to sell their products and movies but I don’t want to sound bitter. That’s what happened to Jazz as well. It’s the way of the world. I’m just glad to be making a few tunes that some folks like.

What are you’re influences?

As far as Swing House music I’d say those folks who have been doing it well before me and have been knocking it out of the park ever since. If I had to run down a few names I’d say Mike Dixon, Wattie Green, Tommy Largo, Biboulakis, South of Roosevelt, and DJ Mibor. On the international scene I enjoy Bart and Baker, Parov Stelar, and Cab Canavaral. These guys make great tunes and I hope one day to get my skill level up to par.

What is electro-swing for you?

When I was young we had no cable and so I watched this old TV that got only like 3 channels clear enough to watch. Lots of old movies came on and I soaked those up. Swing music gives me that nostalgic feeling of my youth.
When I was older with our dance crews we used to spend hours watching old movies to pick up swing and tap dancing moves from the likes of Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, John W Bubbles and the Nicholas Brothers. It just seemed like a natural progression to start incorporating some of those old tunes into the club, and I think the dance floor has reacted to that.
Electro –Swing is capturing some of that old magic and making it relevant again.

A best memory, or story you’d like to share?

Played at an event recently that was a themed party with everyone dress in 20’s and 30’s outfits. People went all out and the venue was old and majestic. We had these flapper girls comes out and do a dance performance while I spun. A really fun time getting into the swing of things (pun intended)

What are you’re future projects?

Look out for new projects coming up on Central Music Recordings and one that just hit on the Caboose label.

Fab Samperi, you grew up in Italia. Can you share with us what your music hystory is ?

I can say i grew up surrounded by music. While my dad was a jazz lover, my older brother Rob was the one who introduced me to a wide array of styles since i was little. Soul, funk, rock n Roll, acid jazz, hip hop , this is what you would find in his record collection. When I was about 8 he was one of the first and most respected DJs in southern Italy to play that kind of music. Rob was also a drummer in a rock n roll band and he taught me how to play drums when i was 10.
He was definitely a major influence in my musical education. 

Did you study to play some instruments?

A few years later my parents sent me to music school, where I learned how to read and write music.  The instrument of choice was the flute. I studied it for 5 years before i dropped it as i was getting more and more into Rock music. So i bought an electric guitar and started my own band where i was the lead singer and guitarist. Later i taught myself the piano also.

How did you start to be a DJ?

Like most DJs, I started off at friends parties. In my case that was back in the late nineties, when Big Beat was having its glory days.

Fatboy slim, Chemical brothers, Dub Pistols, Bentley, Apollo 440, Freddy fresh, are some of the names I would play back then. If you were at some of my earlier parties you’d also hear some Asian Beat, Drum n Bass, Trip-Hop and Dub.

Who called you The Captain?

The story behind the nickname “The Captain” , that is a more recent thing.

It actually started as a joke.  I think that was back in 2005 in Australia. My close friend MC Drew and i were using the word “captain” a lot in our slang back then (you know like a “bad ass” with style) we kind of started a trend. People around us would do the same, anyway the joke is: I made this fake MySpace profile (yep myspace days) and i named it The Captain. It took me almost a week of work, but I made it look great. It had all these fancy captain-related graphics and a proper friend list.Then I uploaded one of the tracks I made with Drew (which was unreleased at the time), and sent him a friend request… next thing I know is I got this angry message from him / blaming me of copyright infringement/ going like: “who the hell are you and who gave you that song”. It took him a while to realise I was teasing him :)  Anyway soon after I made some bootlegs, I didn’t know where to showcase them.. and since I had this fake MySpace profile I thought I could use it as my mashup alter ego.. That’s how it went down.

Fab Samperi, I especially like your Bossa Soul under Jerking Beat but how do you define your music style?

Some claim, “I made a new style” the “Power Bossa” which could be defined as a blend of latin beats, hip-hop, funk and swing. ;) while it’s always nice to get that type of credit, I obviously don’t take it too seriously. As most of you know,  there’s no such thing as a single person making a new musical genre. Every musical style, old or new, builds on the past. The idea of taking samples from old songs and using them in modern productions is not something new. History is full of examples some of which date back centuries ago.

As for The Captain’s style i’ll let the listener decide.

When did you start to produce some creative mashup like that? What was your brain wave?

I started making mashups about 8 years ago. My first released mashup was Everyman that was released on Resense. I had this acapella of a Double Exposure song. Once, during a live dj set I dropped it on a 60′s soul jazz tune playing on the other deck, and the result was amazing. The next day i decided to bring that idea to the studio, and that’s how my first mashup was born.

Your first release was on Goodgroove records right? How did that take place?

Back in 2007 a friend on Myspace passed me this digital promo. The label was called Goodgroove and the digital artwork had some catchy graphics which grabbed my attention instantly. Listening to the music I got hooked on it and wasn’t too long before I sent them some demos to see if they were interested. That’s how I met Slim, and how i started releasing on Goodgroove records.

You are one of the first DJ/Producer released on Resense Label from Austria . Can you present this main label and tell us how the nu-soul adventure started with them ?

Resense was one of the very few bootleg labels in 2007 that would put out these crazy soul, reggae and jazzy mashups. I used to be a fan of GAMM, but that was before I bumped into Resense. They had the sound I was looking for, in that particular moment.

When I made my first mashup, there was no Facebook nor SoundCloud, and MySpace was still in its early stages. If you wanted to submit a track to a label you would have to do it through email. Somebody referred me to Resense management. I mailed them the track they liked it a lot and decided to release it on their next v/a vinyl.

You are, at the moment, back with some heavy cool tunes with the main Ghetto Funk HQ crew. Can you please explain us how did you start working on that release?  What was your main goal doing it?

I was part of the Ghetto Funk Crew from the very beginning. I always liked the way Slim worked, I think he’s a great label manager, and a smart business man. I’ve known him since he started with Goodgroove . Now with Ghetto Funk he teamed up with Will Streetwise and their doing great things together they took it to another level. So I always wanted to make a record on Ghetto Funk, but I  was always so busy with my other projects and couldn’t find the time to focus on it.

Last year finally I made up my mind and told them I was ready for a full official release.

My main goal was to make an EP with four different sounds in that ghetto funk style. So we got Rock with “Club Band”, with have FUNK with “Kick That”, Reggae with “Bam” and Swing with “Class & Style” everything all in a four package album.

What is your definition of the electro swing ?

The “standard” definition of Electro-swing, for me is having that 20′s to 40′s jazz sound with an electro modern feel. However we all know how its modern definition can be applied to a broader range of music productions nowadays.

Eventually I would say it could be anything bouncy, with a cool retro feel!

What about the show on stage? How is important for you? How do you get closer with the audience?

Shows are definitely a big part of the fun. I think they are important as they represent the best way to establish a direct connection with the fans. When you’re deejaying you definitely want to have fun and feel part of the crowd  ..you gotta get into it you know. But at the same time you’re the DJ, and your job is to bring the good music to the party, and most importantly the hype!

In other words you’re the Captain of the ship, you need to bring them all aboard and the journey begins!

Which artists you was honoured to share the stage with?

Probably Paul Murphy. He’s not as well known by the masses as he deserves to be, but we can easily refer to him as the first man who started the dance floor jazz & Funk scene in Europe way back in the late 70′s. His name was cited by the likes of Carl Cox and Gilles Peterson (to name a few) as their major influence.

He’s a legend. I’ve played with him twice in Tokyo and in Netherlands.

Which artist would you be glad to collaborate with?

That’s really such a hard question to answer there are so many to mention. I know I might sound like a dreamer but, production-wise probably Mark Ronson, Beck, Dub Pistols…. I have the upmost respect for them all.

What’s your plan for the new year 2013 ? Will you still DJ or focus on the producing works?

I’ll do both, but my main goal is making music to make people happy. I’ve had a very difficult year in 2012 and I had to take a break but now, I’m back in the game and I’m focused only on production and the festival season.

What will be your next ep?

“a Fab Samperi’s 7″ on Agogo with the remix of Smoove & Turrell’s- “Hardwork” on the A-side and the remix of Soul Session’s – “Soul desire” on the flip ! It should be out next month.

Then we’ll have my Remix Album coming next featuring 13 tracks (remixes from other artists) plus some bonus tracks.

Well we are primarily a family rave crew who have been involved in putting on parties and playing music since the early days. We originally lived on the road in a truck with a travelling sound system and parties and music were a central part of our life so we brought up our family around these principals.

We initially started the label to support our music as my sound is fairly unique and I was unwilling to compromise with what other labels wanted to put out.  It then started to become important to help our friends to release their own music.

We have always been very open minded about what we put out, and an Audiotrix release can be in any number of different styles – the only real criteria is that it’s dancefloor friendly as all our music is designed to work in a party environment , whatever the style.

Can you tell us who is part of Audiotrix ? (label, artists, promoters, partners…)

There are many different levels!

The core crew is our family. Me and my partner Meltdown Mickey are the main   DJ’S/Liveset and his sister Feenix 13 is in charge of visuals and our strong graphic image. Our son Max Itup has been reliably ripping up dancefloors all over Europe since he came of age, and will soon be producing on the label.

After that comes our friends and musicians on the label such as Doublscotch,Funny Ox and Sunka. And then of course, all our loyal supporters who support what we do and come down to our events also feel like part of the family.

I am fascinated by your vinyl shop, because you are one of the only survivors to sell vinyl nowadays. I feel that you just love this format. You’ve got your own shop, with quality records. Every time I go to your website I discover new stuff, new artists… And “wow” they are just awesome! Where do you find all these idea ?

I started DJ ing in 92 and have always been a very keen collector (train spotter as we say in England) I started by choosing whatever records I liked regardless of style – dance music was less genre based back then in any case. As we travelled a lot to different countries to put on parties , my first port of call was always the record shop where you could find tunes in the style of local DJ’s, broaden your horizons and get some insight into the sound people there were into.

After many years I began to think I had a certain talent for selecting the hits – or more importantly the tunes that would work on the dancefloor. But with more and more of my gigs being liveset based, I really wanted to share my passion (some might say obsession) with other people and do what I could to support vinyl.

I had always sold records at the parties and dreamed of having my own record shop , but it’s only the internet that has made that possible , as it has made discovering new music and artists a lot easier. It also meant that we didn’t need a physical shop and could do it all from our home base.

And as for love of the vinyl, it’s more like an addiction.

What kind of music do you sell in your shop ?

It’s a big mixture, at the moment we have a lot of Ghetto and Nu Funk as it’s a sound that seems to stay true to the vinyl format. But by and large, we do everything from house to techno, to swing, to breakbeat to drum n bass to moombathon. If it kicks and it’s on vinyl – it’s in stock ;-)

Part of the problem is to find new stuff that still comes out on vinyl. I wanted to stock a lot of Electro Swing and Balkan/gypsy beats but this is getting harder and harder to source on vinyl , I often have to go direct to the labels and get tunes shipped in which can be expensive.

What is, in your opinion, the best release you’ve ever made?

Apart from that we obviously sell our own stuff which can be diverse and the releases of a lot of independent labels from France and Italy because their roots are from the same scene as ours and we want to support them in any way we can.

Difficult to say – If I  have a record where I can play all 4 tracks that would be extremely useful, so the last Audiotrix releases with Funny Ox , Sunka and Doublscotch have been good for me.

As the amount of music getting released on vinyl became less it became more important for me to release tunes for me to play and became a big motivation in releasing other artists on vinyl.

Do you sell a lot of vinyl records? Or is it more for supporting this format and talented artists?

No , it’s getting harder and harder and I have to say that I get disheartened on a fairly regular basis. Now we sell 300 copies of our own releases and the profits are very minimal – Possibly the only way it really works is because we can sell a lot of records for full  rice through the shop and are able to swap with other labels.

If I could find a distributor in England or Germany to take another 100 copies of each release it would make things a lot easier  – it’s lucky that a lot of the talented artists on our label are just happy to be out on vinyl and they know that it’s not a big money spinner.

Ixindamix Remix and the next Vinyl E.P will be a collaboration between Audiotrix and Labrat Audio with Crystal Distortion and Myself.

Do you think you can give us some good example of what you are doing with music, to share with www.electro-swing.com?

I’m giving away the title track of my last release to electro swing members – it’s my take on Electro Swing mixed with the cheesy acid basslines that I’m known for. It’s called Russian Roulette.

Some points that you would like to share with the audience ?

We also have a digital shop for mp3 and wav sales but there is a minimum fee of 5 euros for which you get 3 Wavs or 5 mp3′s – it’s totally independent , but we’ll never be able to compete with the big stores. I’m actually massively disillusioned with the way the music business has gone and often wonder why I’m still so involved with it. Just can’t help myself.

On 11^th January Zone Music released an album called “This is Electroswing”. I was quite curious due to the fact that I did not know any of the names of the producers (Guido Spumante, Pepe Spumante and Junior di Luca). So I took a closer listen.

The album contains of 15 tracks. Quite noticeable is the shortness of the tracks, the longest lasts about 3 minutes the total time of the album is 35 minutes!
All tracks are very well produced – great brass sections, cool rhythmic variety, all in all a top notch production, which I found also very inspiring for myself.
All tracks are instrumentals and provide a very nice cool swingy athmosphere.
And that’s the point -  this production was made for Zone Music (www.zonemusic.co.uk), an online music library for production music – this explains the shortness of the tracks, because they are meant to be edited.  Nevertheless they are also usable in DJ sets!

Some tracks provide a latin feel, one track sounds like a well known track by Caro Emerald, some are more clubby but all tracks are very uplifting and put a grin on your face!

I wanted to know more about the production team, because there was nothing to find in the web – finally I got this press release , which explains the outstanding quality of this production:

It was 1996 when brothers Guido & Pepe Spumante, along with longtime collaborator on all things musicale Junior Di Luca met over a few glasses of Moretti and a couple of shots of Sibona Grappa Di Barberesco in the tiny Bar Del Teatro, high up above Lago Trasimeno in the hilltop village of Castel Rigone. It was at this point they decided to pool their personal collections of vintage studio gear and crates of dusty vinyl, and open the now infamous recording studio ‘Villa Baglione’.

The studio was, and indeed still is, a huge success, with some of the cream of the Italian music scene passing through its gates. From Giovanni Tagliatini to Paulo Massi, Fausto Papetti to Romano Mussolini everyone has worked there.

Roll on to 2010, when the Spumante brothers discovered some old reels of tape that belonged to their late Father, the famous band leader Salvatore Spumante, hidden in an empty barrel of Domecq Double Century. Upon hearing these sweet-smelling tapes for the first time in over 60 years they knew they’d stumbled upon a treasure trove of sampling heaven. This led to their first forays into the world of library music, a genre that they’d much admired for many years having grown up listening to Salvatore’s vast collection of work for Cinevox.

‘Cornucopia of Kitsch’, released in 2011 has been extremely popular, so to capitalise on that success, they now bring you their unique take on the worldwide dancefloor-filling sensation that is ‘Electro-Swing’.

Involving musicians from around the globe (including members rumoured to have been part of Ennio Morricone’s inner circle), ‘This Is…Electro Swing’ will have you up on your feet & gyrating to the beat. With its big brass & beaty rhythms you’re in for a real treat.

Then I played that gold track “Blues Brother” ! I fall in love direct with the bassline, but when the trumpett pump start my gyspsy heart get the beat! Men! You truly know what the miracle of electro-groove is about ! You guys are so brilliant to record the quality of instruments with a re-creative beat !

Who are you? What is your music history? Who is who and who does what?

Daniel Wells: I started as a EDM Dj in our hometown lüneburg. After a time I got to be known pretty well and gained a big audience. Over the Years as a Dj I started to fall in love with tech/house music and as a result I tried myself out as a producer. As I am also into other Music like HipHop or other Rhythms I did not limit myself to an ordinary beat. Everything began as a small project in my room until Samir and I started to make music together. I am the mind behind the arrangement and the beats.

Samir Shedid: My passion for music started a long time ago. When I was small I tried out a lot and played in hell a lot of different bands. I played everything from keyboard to guitar and even drums. I can’t live without music and it always played a big role in my life. Nowadays I act as a live and studio Musician. At the moment I am studying at the POP Academy in Hamburg and I am pleased how many people you get to know and which new projects launched from there. In Al Na’ir & El Nath I am the one who plays in all the instruments.

Why did you choose Al Na’ir & El Nath as name?
Could you explain us?

Just came up to our mind while making a track. We have decided to choose names of stars in the universe.

How would you describe your music?

Daniel Wells : It has a very authentic individual style. We try to distinguish ourselves from other musicians. It is also recognizable because of that fact. While working on a track it feels like composing a puzzle. First you have to find all the components and then fit them together. Also many of our tracks build themselves up in a “puzzly” way.

Samir Shedid: In our music you can find many styles and harmonies combined. It is very unique from what you hear from others and that is what makes it unexpectedly.

How did the Al Na’ir & El Nath project start ?

We don’t know seriously. We just met and came up with a song and begun to produce more and more. We had to orientate us in the beginning. After a while we found our own style and started to build upon that.

How do you process to create your sound? What equipment do you use to produce cool tracks?

Basically we work with Reason and a midi-keyboard, but at the moment we’re getting into working with live instruments and singers in the studio. We hope that our new productions, which go deeper into the “Swing-thing”, will please as many listeners as before.

What is Electro Swing for you?

Daniel Wells: I just love that groove! It makes you want to jump wherever you are and start to dance! Together with electro it is a ticking time bomb where you can’t wait for the next drop to come and close your eyes and just be. It combines two styles with which I honestly fell in love with. I can’t let my ears off it.

We launched the electro swing group “Swing Fever” on soundcloud and a lot of people started to post their songs. I enjoy listening to every single track! It fills me up with joy hearing all these cool new ideas! The community is growing so rapidly and every corner you turn into you find something new! Just love it.

Samir Shedid: Swing has a certain style, which I like. Put together with electro beats and bass the feelings brought by the music can be described as a firework!
Every time I listen to a new Electro Swing track I am inspired and have many new ideas. Exactly what any good music should accomplish.

What are your plans gentlemen, any cool release coming up?

At the moment we are working on a WHOLE album!! And parallel on an EP. As we said combined with the studio and real instruments. We want to make it sound more alive and animating.
We know that there was a time where we uploaded a track every week or at least one track every month, but we want to take our time fitting together our album, mainly because we want it to be a BOMB.

Could you share with us one of your best music moments?

Daniel Wells : One of the best moments in our carrer as Al Na’ir & El Nath was a Gig at a local Club in Lüneburg. The House was cooking. The Queue was so long and people couldn’t come in, because the club was full. We were there as Dj’s and the people were flipping out as we played our very own songs. It was a very nice feeling to get that kind of feedback.

Samir Shedid : I totally agree with Daniel. There are a lot of moments I have experienced over the time as a musician and basically inspiring others.

Here are few questions I wanted to ask Richard and before we get started I thank him very much for his kindness and the amazing tracks he makes. Especially the one he did for our Exclusive Track series here on electro-swing.com

Hi Rich! What drove you into Swing music? and why do you think Electro Swing is exciting ?

I first starting Djing Electro Swing in my DJ sets in 2010 after hearing it through a good friend of mine DJ Switch, I remember thinking how much fun the music was. However it wasn’t until summer 2011 that I tried my hand at producing Swing Music. As the rhythm is the thing that gets me most excited about swing music, it is what I wanted to focus on heavily in my music, and as I come from a Bass music background it was only natural that the bass would flow through my swing music too.

One of the things that keeps electro swing music so interesting for me is the fact that it is not limited to a particular tempo. Where say, for example, in Dubstep all the music tends to be 140bpm, give or take 5bpm, or DnB/Jungle 176-180 bpm, electro swing music is very varied in tempo, like jazz, and therefore is not limited by this factor, which allows for much variation and diversity in the genre. I also really love the swing beat, no matter what genre it is used in, it just feels more natural to me.

Another thing about Swing music I am really enjoying is the club scene. There really are good vibes at Electro Swing nights – i’m not really into events with lot’s of people standing around looking moody, we’re there to dance, party, and enjoy the music.

I know you’re in love with Reggae and Dubstep.  Where does your music come from? Let us know who you are…

I come from a musical family, so was playing piano from as far back as I can remember. I got turntables at the age of 18 and got into mixing DnB & Hip Hop vinyl – this is where I developed my scratching skills. I didn’t really get into Reggae till I moved to Birmingham in 1999 and started listening to the local pirate radio. I bagged me a copy of Sizzla’s ‘Da Real Thing’ album and backtracked all the decades of great reggae music right back to the 50′s. Syncopated beats, phat basslines, with great singing & mcing – Reggae has had a great impact on me musically.

My background is as a DJ (originally DnB, Hip Hop, & Rave music but then later Reggae, Dubstep, Breaks, & anything else which fits into the melting pot),but I started experimenting with producing music in 2007, mostly Dubstep. I felt that Dubstep music combined bass, intricate drums, and dub reggae sounds together so was a logical starting point). It wasn’t till 2010 that I really got the time to really get into production properly – we formed Brotherhood Of Filth, a Turntablism Dubstep DJ group consisting of myself, Malicious DJ, & DJ Switch, on 4 vinyl decks. Check out our track Green Fingers with Dezi Roots, which combines reggae, dubstep, and a swing beat. It was also 2010 that I started delving into swing (which takes us back to your first question).

What’s in your studio? Can you tell us about your workflow?

I don’t really have any hardware as such, just a midi keyboard and computer. I find when I’m making music I can’t sit down for just an hour or two, I have to be rooted behind my computer for as long as I can get, preferably all day. I start with making the beat – once I can groove to it I can start working on the rest of the track. I need to be happy to sit and listen to just the beat on it’s own for hours and not get bored.

When Djing I use 2 technics turntables, Serato, and a laptop – this setup is good for me as I like to scratch in my sets. I don’t mind if people are laptop Djs as long as they use skills to manipulate their equipment to it’s full potential.

I really love the track you are giving away for our electro-swing.com exclusive series. A remix of Peggy Lee “Hallelujah” vs a Ludacris acapella. How came the idea?

Thanks! I have made a number of swing tunes of different styles but wanted to make a tune that would combine my Dubstep style with my Swing style, and not just the bassline influence. Peggy Lee has so much soul in this track, and Ludacris has such a powerful voice, it seemed a great match together.

I believe most producers realize how your sharp, fine and accurate your music is. Do you consider yourself a perfectionist?

Yes but it can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. I’d rather make less music that is of a good quality rather than just bashing out tunes for the sake of it. When making a tune, it is usually the basslines that I spend longest writing, editing, deleting, and then re-writing again.

You often play in the UK where you live… I know you came to Belgium and France too. How different is it? Is traveling to showcase your music part of the plan?

Crowds can be very different wherever you go, even in within the same country. When I played in France and Belgium they were great crowds, it was a lot of fun – we even had crowd-surfers when we came to Paris which was great to see.

I love travelling and definitely plan on spreading my music as far and wide as I can. As a DJ my priority is to get people dancing, and I like to put a lot of variety of styles into a set. I do play my own music when I play a gig, my heart and soul has gone into making the music and there’s no better feeling than seeing people dancing to your music.

What do we need to know about the UK based label called “Ragtime Records”?

This is a label I’ve started with Tom from the Electric Swing Circus to showcase the growing Electro Swing genre. Freshly Squeezed have done an amazing job of growing the Electro Swing scene with their label, but there really aren’t many labels out there for this kind of music – how many online record shops you know have an electro swing section?

We will be releasing our own music on this label of course, but there are other talented producers we will be releasing on the label. So if any producers out there are looking for a platform for releasing their music then please get in touch.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m a bit of a music/alias slut really, so as well as my Swing music (& my other DJ alias The Doctor for Hip Hop and Bass music), I am part of a few bands/groups too… the Alternative Dubstep Orchestra (Live Dubstep), Brotherhood of Filth (Dubstep Turntablism) & The Silverbacks (Live Hip Hop).

I’ve had the privilege of working on new material with some of these musicians, aswell as other local musicians, which has been really exciting, so expect to hear some of this soon.

I do of course love sampling too though so expect plenty more cheeky remixes, and swing with the big bass sound!

I have known these three for a long time as we live in the same city, have friends in common and we have also shared a few stages together. I’m really pleased I can get this short interview at last.

How would you describe your music?

Larry: It’s kind of Big Beat with lots of Jazz/Swing samples, some ethnic samples and turntablism

Rok: We love filthy, heavy basses and we use lots of different samples from a wide range of music.

Larry: We focus on the groove…

You’ve been using Swing samples on two of your most successful tracks (Andrews Break & Jump for Swing) but I know you Guys don’t like to be labelled «Electro Swing». Why?

Larry: Both these samples were and still are famous (Andrews Sisters & Louis Armstrong) so I believe that’s why our versions are successful. These two tracks are simpler than the others as well which might be another reason for their success. We don’t only focus on Swing but we do have two other tracks you could label Electro Swing: A guide to happiness & Our Lazy Day, so let’s say our music is Half Electro/ Half Electro Swing.

Rok: As we said, we love different types of samples. Those tracks got famous, especially in the Electro Swing world but that wasn’t our aim in the first place, when we created the tracks we didn’t know the world Electro Swing existed. Then we realised it was more a movement than a music genre and we were happy to participate in all these happenings, gigs, parties and have a little fame.

John: I’m looking for Brian… Do you know where Brian is? (French joke) (Laughter)

Electro Swing is changing quickly now. You’ve been playing at a lot of these parties, what do you think about these changes?

Larry: Brian is in the Kitchen I guess. (end of the French joke) (Laughter)

What we see when we play these parties is more and more people so I think it’s going well. I’m glad because there are so many styles of music, not just house!

Rok: We’ve seen that Electro Swing gigs are very open minded, places of expression. There are lots of different arts mixed in one party. It’s very interesting and it should stay for a long time.

John: Yes for sure … !!!???

John: No it’s Ok I can speak English ! (Laughter) I think people like Electro Swing but sometimes they’re quite surprised when they see us on stage because some of our music can be very different and they don’t always expect it… Usually they like it so it’s all good…

About your last album Morphism. Are you happy with it? Is it selling well?

Larry: It’s selling well in France and a bit in the UK. More in digital in other countries, especially Andrew’s break (Laughter). Yes we are happy with Morphism, it’s a first album and we have had very good feedback about it

John: Yes for sure … !!!??? (Laughter)

Rok: We don’t know really how many copies have been sold world wide but from what we’ve seen so far its selling well.

Larry you told me few months ago that your music will change to become more «Electro». Will you still use samples ?

Larry: Some tracks we are working on now still have samples in them (russian, swing …) and

we’re pretty sure we will release them.

Rok: We will also be producing some darker electronic music as well.

John: Yes for sure … !!!???

Anything coming up ?

Larry: on the 31th of October we’re releasing a FREE track with the Jarring Effect label. It’s quite a dark one but it will be awesome.

Rok: Yes that one may not please all the swing music fans

How was the gig tonight at Hanoi Rock City?
Brilliant! There’s nothing better than a good bass-hungry crowd! It was a really fun gig, really nice venue too, I hope to return soon.

You grew up near Bristol, the birthplace of the GhettoFunk movement. Now you live in Taiwan. How did you become a DJ and why did you relocate to Asia?
I grew up about 20 minutes from the largest festival in Europe (Glastonbury) and seeing a few performances there in 2003 (aged 14) absolutely inspired me to become a DJ. I remember watching the Plump DJs playing to several thousand people in what was then known as the Dance Tent, and knowing at that moment that this was what I wanted to do with my life. I started saving for my first pair of decks as soon as I got home. In 2011 I ended up playing straight after the Plump DJs at Glastonbury, which was a pretty special full circle moment for me.
I moved to Bristol when I was 18 and started running Bass Kitchen club-nights with a Taiwanese DJ called MiniJay. The first time I toured Taiwan was a couple of years later, after MiniJay told a bunch of local promoters and clubs that I was worth booking. Straight away I fell in love with the country, and I was booked to tour twice more over the next couple of years before being offered a residency by Kaohsiung’s number one underground dance music venue, Brickyard. It was too good an opportunity to turn down.

Tell us about Asian audiences and clubs. Is there a musical sensibility particular in Asia?
There is a bit of a dirth of decent clubs in Taiwan and around a lot of Asia sadly. Commercial music is king unfortunately and glitzy commercial clubs vastly outnumber the soulful underground ones in my experience. Having said that, it seems to be slowly but surely improving, in terms of a broader range of styles being promoted to more people. I feel like I could write a book on the subject. You have had tracks released on Riddim Fruit label with other big names in the Ghetto Funk movement. How did this collaboration come about?
I can’t remember exactly how we got chatting initially but a few years back, me and Ben (the manager of Riddim Fruit Records) arranged a gigswap (where Ben and another DJ would come and play at one of our Taunton events and me and another Bass Kitchen DJ went down to play in Exeter). Over the years we played a bunch more gigs together all over the place and eventually he told me about the new label he was starting. I had just written a tune which we both felt was perfect for the label (Ramblin’ Man), and the rest is history.

You are the founder and ‘head chef’ of the Bass Kitchen, could you explain to us what it is about?
Bass Kitchen is a worldwide eclectic (well, anything bass heavy) club-night chain which was born in the UK and has expanded with branches across Poland, Canada and Taiwan. When we started, most club-nights in Bristol were focused on one or maybe two styles of music, our idea was to put everything together, like ingredients in a kitchen, and create a crazy multi-genre all styles night – anything from ghettofunk, minimal house, hip-hop and reggae to breaks, dubstep, electro, garage and dnb. In the years since then, this has very noticeably become a lot more common with many more events varying up their styles of music all night. Bass Kitchen’s around the world have seen our team booking the cream of underground dance music talent, including A Skillz, Ed Solo, Featurecast, J Majik, Rennie Pilgrem, JFB, General Midi, Freq Nasty, Deekline, The Ragga Twins, DJ Fu and Far Too Loud.

You produced some great tracks on your recent Worldwide Remix Tour (available on your Facebook page). What was your approach? How did you collaborate with other producers?
The idea behind it was that I wanted to do a proper project with a theme tying it together to try and challenge myself a little. I hadn’t seen the worldwide remixes idea done by any other producers so I thought it would be ideal. There are so many amazing sounds in music all over the world which are very rarely sampled in electronic stuff (I’m a big fan of traditional Chinese strings for example, which you can hear on a few of my tracks).
Also, whereas a few years back I was focused on getting all of my music onto labels, this year my focus has just been on getting it out there to as many people as possible, so all of the tunes on the tour are available for free download.
As for the collaboration aspect, I knew a bunch of the other producers involved already and approached others for the first time (usually through SoundCloud or Facebook). It was great to get so many amazing producers on board for the project.

What is electro-swing for you?
A blend of two amazing styles, one very current and the other pretty much forgotten until this genre revived it. For me, electro swing is perfect summer festival music, day or night.

What have you got in the pipeline for next year?
Aside from being busy with constant gigs across Taiwan, I’m playing at a huge festival in Thailand on Koh Tao in January, alongside the Dub Pistols and Orbital. Soon after that I’ll be gigging in Malaysia, Shanghai and a few other spots across Asia. I’ll be heading back home for a big UK and Europe tour in the summer too.

Hello mister S Strong,  could you tell us how did you start to be a DJ ?
Hello, I’m Stelios ( S Strong ) from Athens, Greece and i’me DJ since the last 9 years. I remember i was so shy during the school years so I went straight into music to feel better (haha!). At the beginning,  I started to live and follow the greek hip-hop movement, still djing along with graffiti ! It was my main “elements”. Then I started to play into some small bars and parties around after school.

How did the S Strong project start?
The project started without lot of thinking. After some years, some unexpected stuff come to you . “S” is the first letter of my name and “Strong” is the half of my surname, also some people say I’m the strongest unsuccessful chef in Greek history.

How would you describe your music ?
As a DJ, I try to make the floor go on fire and I describe myself as a party DJ having tunes from dub,reggae, breaks, ghetto funk till dnb & jungle(which is my favorite for the party time!).
AS FOR THE SWING , of course this is the most of my sets & always intrigued me, but never had the courage or the quality of the remixes I wanted to make it proper. My edits are not always a floor burner but I love having them for a good warm up giving some feeling before the party goes bananas!

Many goods electro grooves producers and DJ, are coming from Greece. I’me thinking about Timewarp Music, Carnibal Records and the new one Katakana edits, working with a lot of reggae and tropical influences. Could you tell your collaboration about some greek artists and labels ?
Greece always had good DJs but last years the quality of the producers too is going over the top ! In electronic scene we have a tradition in house scene, but this part is not in my focus area now.In swing I support the Athens based Carnibal Records, with a very good taste on what they release and with pretty good swing stuff. I’m having collabs in DJ level with Phunk Sinatra and Funkanizer(also he controls my track masters) and others. With labels I haven’t made yet any steps for releases I’m giving away some free tracks and getting prepared for a forthcoming EP without any label in mind.

Could you say that there is a real european music movement about electro grooves production?
Electro swing last 5 years has been in the center of production, with all the good and bad stuff can have. A massive turn into a style can make it repellent for some people but for sure in the end the “smoke will clear” and the true followers will stay.

What is Electro Swing for you ?
A beloved style with a lot of groove, true feeling and potentials to evolve in something more!

How do you process to create your sound? What equipment do you use to produce cool tracks ?
My way of producing is computer based only except of some scratches or live bass additions. I chop samples from old tracks I usually have on vinyl and start “cooking”.

What’s your plans gentleman? Any cool tracks released soon?
Some special collabs and gourmet edits for all the hungry kids.

Could u tell us one of your best memories of your artistic life you want to share with us?
I want to share all my memories but I can’t remember them cause usually I’m drunk when I live them…

So Boogie Belgique, it is obvious you are a native of the Country of Fries, but can you tell me more about yourself and your artistic project ?

My name is Oswald Cromheecke and I’m 22 years old. I study Illustration at Sint Lucas, Ghent Belgium. When I’m not busy drawing or animating I’m producing as Boogie Belgique. Before Boogie Belgique I used to play in a reggaeband with some friends named Jahfar but when the band unfortunately split I’ve focused more on producing myself.I’ve really started Boogie Belgique last summer with the release of my free debut album “Blueberry Hill” with Dusted Wax Kingdom records. After the release everything went really fast and now my second album “Time for a boogie” is coming out in January 2013 with Cold Busted.

What drove you in to Abstract Hiphop and electro swing music ?

I’ve always liked swingjazz, hiphop, triphop, funk & soul. After a while I came across electroswing and liked it immediately. But most electroswing missed a touch of (how do I say this) “nostalgic soul”. (With a lot of exceptions of course : Odjbox, Proleter, Parov Stelar,…) In my opinion something very important since you’re working with old samples that have a whole history behind them and have to be ‘respected’ in a way. I wanted to make music that people could dance to but also music that could be played in your living room or in your car. After experimenting for a long time I started to make a kind of mixture between Abstract Hiphop and electroswing music. I try to produce music that has modern beats but still has that delicate/vintage touch that you can hear in the originals.

What’s in your studio ? How do you make music ? You see yourself more as a musician, a beatmaker ? Do you work with musicians or only with samples ?

To be honest I really don’t have an actual studio. I have to travel a lot by train and always take my laptop with me. This is a great placeto listen to a lot of old and new music and choose the samples I’m going to need. This is probably the most time-consuming part. Afterwards I start producing in Ableton 8. Most producers work and experiment in session view but I always work directly in the arrangement view. This maybe isn’t the right way but it works out better for me. I think you can cut and manipulate samples more precise ( and faster ) working this way, than using all kinds of sample-devices that make it more complicated. Most of the time I play my synths and basses myself and try to avoid samples from databases. I already worked with a great singer that you can hear on the track “The Getaway” (Blueberry Hill LP) and I’m planning on working with more musicians in the future. I hope to find a good mixture of samples and real musicians in my upcoming albums.

You are giving away your album “Blueberry Hill” for FREE on the internet, can you explain why ? and the name of Blueberry Hill is it a reference to the western comic Blueberry ?

When I became a part of the Dusted Wax Kingdom I immediately liked their ideals concerning free music. I think it’s so much easier to get your name out there when everybody can download the debut album for free. Certainly now, when the music industry is changing so fast. Now it’s more important for musicians to earn their money with live-shows and donations than selling albums (which you can download illegally for free anyway). But then again it’s also important that when you start to get more fans, they can support you by buying the next albums. That’s why my next album “Time for a boogie” is not going to be free. I’m going to need the money to build on my liveshows and the next albums. The name Blueberry Hill came from the lyrics of the sample that I used in the last track. So not from the cowboy Blueberry, although I like the comic a lot.

Your next album will be release on the 23th January on Cold Busted records. Can you tell us more about this ?

It’s going to be funkier and more uptempo but still with the atmosphere of my previous album “Blueberry Hill”. I’ve made some of the tracks when “Blueberry Hill” wasn’t even released so I think it’s going to be a good sequel. Like I mentioned earlier in this interview the album is going to be named “Time for a boogie” and it will come out on January 23 2013 with Cold Busted. Will be available on both digital and CD !

Your music is interesting because the most of the productions is more house swing or swing-step, i don’t know a lot of artists who produces hop-swing, to name a few Smokey Joe & the Kid, Odjbox… What do you think about the electro swing scene ?

I really like the good vibe around electro swing. Certainly in France, the UK and America. I really like the ” White Mink Black Cotton” series and would love to be part of a next project in the future. Where I live in Belgium the electro swing scene is still very small but that’s changing very fast. I think it’s a genre that’s underrated but it has a bright future.

How do you transpose your studio work on stage ?

Now I’m playing a dj-set with my great trumpet-player, Cedric Van Overstraeten. We have 2 gigs coming up in Greece at the start of december and afterwards I’m planning on working on something new. I’m going to focus more on the live performance and we’ll start working with a live drummer. Coming soon!

For the end do you have a good memory of your artistic life you want to share with us ?

I want to say to all upcoming producers that it’s so important to use blogs and sites like Soundcloud and Bandcamp. It’s a great way to release your tracks yourself or get picked up by a label. In my case everything went really fast this way and now I’m already playing abroad 5 months after the release of my debut album. So in these times everything is possible I guess, certainly when you love the stuff you do.

Hi Mano, first and always in demand: What is Electro-Swing for you?
A modern style of swing and similar influences which transport feelings of happiness and love to the dancefloor and people.

How did you come to this genre?
I started to play music at the age of 6, learning piano, trumpet, guitar and later drums. At 13 i started playing in several bands and started to produce own songs. So I am very open minded to different styles of music and I experimented with mixing them over the last years. Apart from that I have always been very interested in music and those experiments from others.

Swinger E.P. is your first album. Tell us about. How is your production-wise. Do you use samples or do you record own instruments parts. How would you describe your music?
I record acoustic or use software-instruments. But I end up sampling again and again, because I can not resist the raw material. Sampling is a cool thing and can bring a special vibe. I love both ways and especially the combination.

On my album “Swinger” you can hear sample-based tracks like “Brassilikum” or own stuff like “Piano Afrika”. A good example for a combination is “Karussell” which is based on a sample combined with the programmed second sax.

In contrast to feel and produce music, describing is not really my thing. I think it is based on techhouse and minimal with a variety of musical influences. I have also produced HipHop and Rock with and for other artists.

In the recent years I’ve produced a lot of electro-songs. I have chosen the best to finish them and split them into two albums. “Swinger” was the first one. The other album “Hand & Fuß” (Hand & Foot) will be released in 2013 and includes less Swing elements and samples, it is more technoid. But of course i will continue making songs with Swing- or Jazz-elements and i am already working on some projects!

I’m happy about your release, because it’s also available on good old Vinyl. For me as Vinyl-picker & -player it’s important to find new cool tracks on this medium. What do you think about the global digitalization of DJ’ing and the hard way to find good tracks on vinyl.
The global digitalization of DJ’ing has good and bad sides but it is unstoppable and i can not discuss this in detail here. However a brief insight into my way of DJ’ing:

I used vinyl for a long time, now i prefer timecode vinyls via Traktor. The advantage is that I can test new songs live and see, how the crowd reacts. But I love vinyl and the way of DJ’ing with it. I am glad to have my album on vinyl and hope that more artsits continue to publish on!

What’s your plans? Maybe a tour for „Swinger E.P.“?
Yes i’m currently on tour with the album and working on more tourstops, the tour calendar on www.mano-meter.de fills gradually with appointments. In February 2013 I make tourstops in Bahrain and possibly in Abu Dhabi, and I am also working on a small North America tour in March and maybe April 2013. Keep your fingers crossed!

Hello Tomahawk, could you introduce yourself to us?

I started mixing in 1982, at the age of 16, playing new wave punk, ska. I was also influenced by the 60′s and got very interested in all style of this fantastic music, from 60s: punk, northern soul rocksteady and psychedelic.I also played in a 60s influenced band, with T.Eckert (2-Raum Wohnung).

By the mid 80s i was Djing in many Clubs around Munich.In the 90s i started playing breakbeats, jungle, house, techno. I djed at the first techno raves in Munich (with Dj Hell, U.R, Blake Baxter, Tomy Novy, Acid Scout….) then i had many gigs, Austria, Swiss, France, Germany.. My style was a mixture of electro and also World music, and cosmic. i’ve always been interested in bringing old sounds and new together.

In 1999 i released my first Ep “Porn Beats”, and three more to come in the folowing years.
I also published my first house 12 inch Vinyl “The Latin Theme”.

Then from 2000 to 2005 i released a cd “The meaning of love”, a mixture of 50s and 60s, trip hop, lounge, latin, easy listening. Also released 2 obscure Lp’s, with Peabird (Breakz R uZ) “The Forbidden Fruit” part 1 and 2. I toured for “Ritmo de Bacardi”/Viva-Tv, with famous djs and acts (George Morel, Salome de Bahia, David Alvarado, Sharam Jay, Dj Yellow, Milk and Sugar, Phats & Amp, Future Funk, Small….

Released a doouble Cd with Ritmo de Bacardi- the Latin House, was played at the time in all big cities in Germany and Europe.
Between 2005/2009 i had a break because of a bad illness. Now i’m back in Djing, producing, and organising my own party series “Swing Junction” and “Mondo Exotica”.

In the last years i’ve been playing gigs with artists like Amsterdam Klezmer band, Django 3000, Rotfront, Baba Zula, La Brass Banda, Bakkushan…

What is Mondo Exotica?

Mondo Exotica gives particular attention to Electro swing and Global Beats, its a project from me and my partner Cj Rusky, and its the name of our party, dj team..

Any particular memory from you’re dj experience you’d like to share?

I was resident dj in the famous independant club “circus Gammelsdorf”, worked there for 7 years. I got to frame with my djing so many concerts there eg. Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Psychic TV, Sonic Youth, The Meteors…… I loved the eclectic audience that was there, and i loved playing my musical styles like Independent, Punk, EBM, 50’s, 60’s, Ska, Crossover, Grunge and early electronic beats…
A Saturday in 1994 the club burned down, while i was playing there. luckily noone got injured. It was the end for this cool club.

What is Electro-swing for you?

Electro-swing for me, is something old, with something new, with a touch of Jazz.

What are you’re influences?

My greatest influences are, Henry Mancini, Enio Moricone, and good old music from all around the globe.

What do you work with?

I work with Logic and reason. I am an oldschool dj, i am still spinning vinyls and cds, and do mixing by ear. The sync button is inside me, i truly love music.

You’re future projects?

Continuing Mondo Exotica and Swing Junction serie in Augsburg, try to establish it in other clubs. making my own music with live instruments, and a liveact, and allways hunting for more music…

Palov is from Athens Greece - This artist producer is co founder of Cast-a-Blast in 2006.

Along with Blend Mishkin he forms the duet Palov and Mishkin, launching the compilation “Backslam Extravaganza” (2007).
They then went on to release the widely praised album “Think Twice” (2009) while at the same time remixing and editing for highly acclaimed labels such as G.A.M.M., Rebtuz, Resense, Bastard Jazz, Tru Thoughts, Love Monk etc.

Next to their classic SwingHouse-Set, TC2 are famous for the up to six hours “Evolution-Mix”. Here, they present and document the tradition of the over 80 years old Swing music. On the way from classic 30s-Swing till now they combine Swing Elements with Hip Hop, Dubstep or House music.
In Berlin, TC2 performed in various venues like “Festsaal Kreuzberg”, “Cassiopeia”, “Lovelite”, “Bohnengold”, “Astra Kulturhaus”, “Möbelfabrik” or “Roter Salon”. They gladly and often team up with illustrious DJs, producers and musicians such as Cab Canavaral from Vienna, the Electro Swing Revolution Team and the DJ-Duo Swing Imperium from Prague.

Once a month, they are playing at Electro Swing Revolution, hosted by DJ Globalution and Justin Fidèle, in the Astra Kulturhaus, where they shared the stage with artists like Sound Nomaden, Minimatic, Shemian, Alice Francis, Chris Tofu, Andrej Hermlin and the residents Justin Fidele and DJ Globalution.

Also outside Berlin, The Carlson Two were invited to contribute to different parties in locations such as Rock Cafe/Prague, Moulin Rouge in Paris, Nu Spirit Club/Bratislava, Ex-Blumenbar/Munich, Republic in Salzburg, at the Electro Swing Carneval in Vienna or at the legendary Fusion Festival in Lärz/Germany On tour they played with great artists like [dunkelbunt], Pat Poree, Alice Francis, Bart&Baker, Sid Data and Natanael Megersa. Next to the Club Gigs, The Carlson Two are part of the bilingual Electro Swing Revolution Radio and take part in the conceptual reorientation. Interviews with Electro Swing artists , moderation and exclusive radio mixes are also part of Arons and Julians work. In December they´ll stage two gigs in Russia.

Next to their very wide ElectroSwing repertoire, The Carlson Two cultivate a secret passion for balkan music, ska, rootsreggae, funk and soul.

What is Electro Swing for you ?

There are three aspects of Electro Swing for us:

Music: Electro Swing is the generic term for different music styles, such as HipHop, Dubstep, House etc.; each combined with swingin tunes.

Artistic Setting: deco stuff, dancing lessons, suits and dresses, other fashion

Our definition: Eclectic dance moves, party as if there is no morning, beautiful people and last but not least swingin sounds, that are reminding us of the history and the origin of swing in the afro-american communities, in the 20s/ 30s and also of the german Swing kids, who were persecuted by the Nazis, because of their lifestyle and music.

What is Deluxe? A great mixture of samples, programing and live music?

Pietre: We are an acoustic band, a live band, but we are also producers and beatmakers at the same time. We wanted our first release (the Polishing Peanuts EP) to mix all these elements together.

When did it all start?
Kilo: At the beginning there were only 3 guys in the band.
Liliboy : The six of us have been playing together for two years. For five years it was five guys though.

How do you produce your music? Who’s doing what?
Pietre: It’s always different. For this EP the ideas where composed with instruments, mainly keys and guitar, every musician takes part in the creation process and we use samples as well. Everyone listened to a lot of musical styles while working on the EP and each band member added their own thing. Half of it is sample based, then we add the acoustic layer on top.

What can people expect when they come to see Deluxe on stage?

Pietre: People can expect a real electro dance floor shaped energy with big beats you could compare to Caravan Palace. Deluxe is all about using loads of different instruments and really working each one into the mix. Rhodes, guitar, bass, real horns, you can expect a really complete live music experience when you see us on stage.


Kilo: There’s also a real Hip Hop background and influence in our music. Solid beats, scratches… We are always working on our sound, trying to find our way without being too exclusive to one style or another.

I’ve seen a lot of footage of you playing live, something special happens! You’re having fun together and you have a special relationship with the audience. Tell me about your stage experience.

Pietre: We used to play on the streets and that’s where we learned to keep the quality of our music very high. People there are walking past, if they don’t like what you do, they walk away…

Kaya: When you play on the streets people are not coming to see you so you need to appeal to them and you have to do it quickly. We learnt a lot from that experience and it really helps on stage. Now when the audience comes to see us, we know how to take them with us on our musical trip. We really like to see bands that are able to catch the attention of their audience. We know how to make music but we don’t see ourselves as virtuoso musicians, what we want to do is to

make music everyone understands and wants to dance to. No matter if you’re at the front of the crowd or at the back, we want everyone to have fun, dance, jump around, get exhausted and happy… We want people to leave their problems at the door and join our world.

Pépé: It’s not only about music, we like the idea of something visual… It’s a real show with loads to see and enjoy

Liliboy I think your voice is somewhere in between MIA and Uffie?

Liliboy: That’s okay with me! Funny though because last time I spoke to someone they said it was a mix between Amy Winehouse and Daffy Duck, so I prefer your comparison. I like Cocorosie and have listened to them for years and years, now I’m opening up and finding more stuff. When I discovered Uffie I really liked it.

You’re not French are you?

Liliboy: I’m French … and American

On your EP I really like the track “Pony” It’s similar to the two most successful tracks from Chinese Man (Artichaut & I’ve got that tune). We have lots of fans on the website loving all three of these tracks. What do you think about Electro Swing? Do you see Deluxe as part of it?
Pietre: Not really. We really like some Electro Swing tracks but it’s not a major source of inspiration for us. It’s an influence just like many other things (jazz, french songwriters, hip hop, electro swing…)

Soubri: We could make Electro Swing with a lot of the samples we use but we try to make a wide range of styles, we don’t want to be closed into one genre.

Any little stories you want to share with us?

Soubri: Actually, Pony was composed in Lyon (the city we’re doing this interview in now). We came to play in the city and we planned a week for that, but the weather was awful so we used that time to compose Pony instead.

Your music is really Funky. Are you inspired by Ghetto Funk, producers like Askillz?
We’re slowly integrating those kind of sounds (wobble bass, electro) and using Live to build up heavier elements. The wobble power! it’s coming…

What about the moustache?

DoublScotch is 2 guys. Who is who and who does what? 

Konix: The DoublScotch project is Nicolas Vicente (Konix) & Harold Kabalo (Arok). I’ve been a DJ since 1996, and I initially started out by travelling between the Caribbean islands and South America, playing out wherever I went. Arok was more skilled in production techniques, while I was more focused on giving ideas and vibes, although my production has developed and it is now a real 50/50 split.

Arok: I also began DJing in 1996 and moved into liveset in 2000. I played all over Europe with a hardware and software setup, producing tracks under IOT records (Expedisound and Kontakt serieses) and performing live with the well known underground sound system, Tomahawk.

How did the Doublscotch project start?

Konix: We’ve been brothers in sound for a long time now, playing together at various parties together over the years with our crazy crew around Europe. When we both moved to Paris in 2008, the project evolved naturally and our first loop was on the famous Somos Pacifico edit (the original was by Choc Quib Town). We had such a good laugh during the studio session that it seemed like madness not to continue.

I couldn’t find much information about you on the Internet, but every DJ from the French underground I meet knows you and your music. Tell us about your background in Electronic music?

Arok: We played at a huge number of big free parties around the world (Sound Conspiracy / Tomahawk / Desert Storm / Drop in Caravan to name a few). It was a way of life, providing good vibrations and good music – taking care of each other and the crowd, building deep connections and deeper friendships far, far away from the music business. We were living our passion 1000%, 24/7.

Konix: We were lucky enough to play on big rigs every weekend and it was easy to touch lots of people from all walks of life. Things are very different now as almost all knowledge of an artist comes from the internet and digital media – something we still have to learn to maximise properly ;-)

You’ve been playing this sample based melodic, world, swingy stuff for a long time now. What do you think of Electro Swing, do you feel you were already doing it a long time ago, before the term Electroswing appeared? If yes, how do feel you are part of it now?

Arok: My approach to electronic music has always been built around the sample and searching out loops in every style of music, from ethnic to jazz to folk. I like digging in many different universes, and finding the one loop that can touch the collective unconsciousness. My first loop was a Tibetan vocal that I dropped over a 4/4 beat. I love to mix the rudeness of electro with the human feeling of traditional instruments. We don’t see the creative process as being part of a specific style or genre – we’re open to anything that inspires us.

Konix: I wouldn’t say that we are a part of the ES scene as such. We play a fair few ES tracks in our DJ sets in between house and techno tracks. That is the essence of what we do – we love to mix all kinds of different styles and influences and don’t want to get stuck in one style or scene. Today the DoublScotch sound is more house and deep house orientated.

Arok: We had some great times producing bootlegs (Aznavour, Sinatra, Paolo Conte etc), but now we are more concentrated on recording real musicians (drums, sax, vocals) and creating original samples.

Do you like Jazz? What music do you listen to when you’re home?

Arok: I had a background in rock and jazz before techno got me! I learned piano, guitar and singing. Didn’t get too far with it, but far enough to open my ears. I’ve also done an advanced course in sound engineering at a jazz college where I collaborated with a lot of jazz musicians. I listen to everything under the sun at home and had Marcus Miller on just this morning.

Konix: I’ve been an electronic music addict since the early 90’s. I began to discover other styles of music on my travels through South America and the Carribbean like salsa and cumbia, but at home I spend most of my time working on our projects and looking for good tunes for our DJ sets .:-)

You release tracks on the English label Audiotrix. It’s a gold mine for all Electro Swing enthusiasts (and a label that still releases on vinyl!) How did you become a part of the label?

Konix: We’ve know Ixy, Mickey and Debbie for years, it’s a family story and they are like family to us and we began working with Audiotrix from the very start of DoublScotch.

Arok: They were first supporters of the project. They give us the chance to release on such a well respected label and we are really pleased with the ongoing collaboration. We have lot of respect for the way they manage their label – they are real vibe and energy providers. We love the Audiotrix family.

Any good memories of your artistic life you want to share with us?

Konix: No :-)

Hello Nicolas, can you tell me more about yourself and your artistic project ?

I’m 37 years old, and runing Volfoniq since 7 years. I’ve learned musical therory and practiced clarinet when i was a kid. Classical scores and stuff always annoyed me a lot, so i started to compose elecrtonic music when i discovered trackers software on atari in the late 80s. I soon went into Djaying as it was the techno movement birth in France. I founded several electronic music bands in the following years Volfoniq being the latest and the only one still active.

What drove you into Dub music ? And why is your Dub so different ?

I guess i came naturaly to dub because of two things : my taste of eclectism, and the like of experimentations. These two points are what define dub the best for me. Dub is more than a musical style, it’s a whole way of musical conception, a state of mind. If you look closely to the modern musical history, you realise that dub and jamaican music culture shaped almost everything that has been made in the last 40 years. I realised a few years ago that almost all the bands i liked in my life were somehow related to dub music in a way : might it be thru mixing, effects, or rythm.
I got from my early Dj years the habit to mix electronic music with funk, new wave, world music, soundtracks, movies bits… i kept this like when composing. When you put in the same track tango and ska, or Banghra and dubstep, you have forget everything you know and think music from scratch each time. It’s both very exciting, and a lesson of humility.

On your website I can read “After 7 years of travels and encounters, tons of collaborations and gigs, Volfoniq let you discover his first personal album.” Please tell us more about this 7 year long musical period ?

As I just said, all my musical path is filled with encounters. I started touring first out of France in 2007 and i met a lot of people thru these travels. Volfoniq is a solo live act, but involving people i met depending on the tracks. I’m more comfortable in this way of working, as for me each tune deserves a new approach. We can say it’s a virtual geometry band, and even if i’m alone on stage, there are often recorded parts that came from other musicians or singers around the world. Working this way makes the process of creating an album a difficult task ! I had to stop the stage for several monthes and gather an intimate team of musician friends to set a group of tracks that could fit together. The album is described as a travel diary, i could not imagine better words : there are collaborators i met thru these seven years, and some tracks are from my early works, so it reflects the evolution of what Volfoniq is and has been.
During all these years, a big part of the adventure has been possible thanks to my home label “LibreCommeLair” (http://www.lclweb.org). This place is a real incubator for creative eumlation ! They do brilliant work on promoting artists thru creative commons license.

You are giving away your album “Ernest” for FREE on the internet. You have also set a BUY link for those who want to own an HQ version of the album (WAV track, not MP3) or just to support you. Why don’t you sell your album ?

Sharing my music has always been natural. From the time i started making music, i used to put my tunes on the internet. We were not much to do so by this time, so i quickly connected to the creative commons licenses movement.

When the question to sell it came out, it was obvious for me that you reach more people by properly promoting your music online than selling it.

There was no convenient way to sell digital files in the early 2000′s, and producing a CD costed money and energy i prefered to invest into making music and networking. So when the first digital music shops were set, i always had a good network of people and website and didn’t see the benefit of selling my music. Gigs are where you make real money, and i could tour in several countries, and even play at major events such as Sziget festival without having a single commercial release.

You choosed to give away a track called “Phantomaton” on electro-swing.com exclusive tracks. Anything you want to say about this track ?

Sure ! As many of my tracks, it had several lives. The original is from one of my previous band, the only thing remaining being the guitar intro. It was by this time an electronic ska. I rebuilt it for Volfoniq in 2008 adding the bossa nova touch and the glitches. The mix you can hear now was specially made for ElectroSwing ;)

What’s in your studio ? How do you make music ? You see yourself more as a musician, a producer, both ?

Basicaly, i see everybody as a musician and as a producer. No one has the right to keep the knowledge in a closed chest ;)
I have a very basic setup : a laptop, a 4 chanels soundcard but with good converters for acoustic recordings, a pair of microphones, a midi keyboard and a midi controller with a lot of knobs. Not much more than any bedroom composer indeed.
The most important part for me is the software, i use Ableton Live that is in my opinion the only musical soft able to put ideas in form as they came. I can get back hours on a track, but i need to catch things on the right moment. I construct tracks in a very jamaican way : as long as i don’t have a good riddim (drums & bass) i stick on the basic. I use basslines as a rythmic element, so the rythm is really what defines my tunes. When i’m okay with the riddim, i go on with melodic parts, that can be home made or involve guests.

How do you transpose your studio work on stage ?

Again, jamaican school ! I write a basic score of my tracks with an intro and outro, and the inbetween is mostly looping. That let me plenty of room and possibilities for the live stage ! I follow Mad Professor advice for younger dubbers : no risk, no dub ! Having powerful tools can tempt you to setup a maximum of things in advance.

I do the exact opposit, almost nothing being written. While playing on stage i constantly have to shape the music with the mixer and effects, but also synth parameters and Dj tricks. This permanent state of intensity is so exciting, i think i would get really bored without it.

A good memory of your artistic life you want to share with us ?

I’ve got so many, here’s one of my best : i produced a few years ago a lullabies EP for children, remixing traditionnal children songs from around the globe with a dub approach (see here http://www.lclweb.org/audio_ep_lcl12.htm) . I used by this time to play one of these lullabies at the end of my liveset. So i was finishing a gig in switzerland with “Bonne nuit”, that i only knew as a piano or music box tune. Suddenly the whole audience started to sing alltogether, because there are german lyrics for this lullaby i didn’t even know. Imagine a crowd singing a lullaby with a smile on their face in response to your music… pure magic.

Hey! It’s Rube here. I’m dropping a line to let you know about a nice electro swing tune called “Black Cat Jive” that has just been released on Ago Go records out of Germany by Savages y Suefo that also features a Rube remix. The 12″ has a little bit of dub, latin, electro-swing, and swing-hop to it.

Here’s what the label has to say about it:
The earlier works of the Hungarian dj/producer duo called Savages y Suefo came out on UrbanWorld Records. Now, they continue their mission at Agogo Records with a nice 6 tracker vinyl 12″. Side A contains three own tracks with guest vocalists like Judie Jay and MC Guacho. On the flip side you can find a self remix and two remixes from Rube and Renegades Of Jazz. The 12″ is a melting pot of swing-hop, electro-swing, downtempo, dub and latin music.

If you don’t know their music, you’ll be amazed to realize how important to Electro Swing Skeewiff is. I’ve been in touch with Alex and Elliot from Skeewiff and I can say they’re really cool, they take time for others and are quite generous giving away tons of free quality tracks spreading love & music to the word! I managed to get Alex to answer a few questions I had:

Back in 1998, can you tell me how this started ?

Myself and Elliot were both making music in the early 90s. I released my first vinyl 12″ as a teenager in 1991 under the name Synaesthesia (Feel the Dream – Vinyl Solution) and Elliot was big on the early Belgian Techno scene around that time so we were no strangers to music production when we met. Elliot was a big fan of analog synths, whereas I was more into sampling and beat programming, so it kind of made sense to merge these very contrasting and complimentary fields of expertise as well as our studios. We finally set up a joint studio in Terminus Road, Brighton in 1995.

We then went through each other’s record collections to see where we could find common ground. What we soon realised is we both had very eclectic tastes, so it kind of made sense to not tie ourselves down too much – which I guess is where skeewiff was born – from a love of all musical dance genres from swing, through mambo and exotica to hip hop, techno and Drum and Bass. After a few years of practice, Ministry of sound’s label FSUK sat up and took notice and gave us our first record deal in 1998. Skeewiff were unleashed onto an unsuspecting public with the AWOL EP shortly after.

Did you know at that time you would become professional musicians ?

No. Not at all & it was very difficult to imagine back then. Elliot and I were on the cusp of a wave of techno-literate non-musicians who were suddenly able to create music without having to follow the traditional path of learning an instrument, then forming a band, then getting a deal, then touring etc. Because we learnt the emergent technologies of midi, sequencing and sampling as kids, we were setup to make the finished product right there in our bedroom studios. We take it for granted now that you can single-handeldy bang together a decent quality track on your iPhone, one handed whilst on the train, but before the 90s it was unheard of. You needed studios, and kit and cash and musicians to make music. We were amongst some of the lucky fellows from the first wave of DIY computer folk.

We still don’t really see ourselves as traditional musicians either: Even though over the years we’ve picked up the ability to play what we need on a few instruments (I play drums and keyboards on the albums, and Elliot plays guitar on a lot of skeewiff stuff) I still wouldn’t consider myself to be a traditional musician. Over the years we have had the great privilege to have worked and recorded with some absolutely incredible people like Clyde Stubblefield, Alan Hawkshaw, Tom Jones, Tony Hatch, Incognito, Young Mc, The Brand New Heavies, Finley Quaye, Alison Limerick etc.. The kind of musicians that blow you away every time….. Once you’ve heard such incredible talent its very difficult to see yourself in the same light…. As the great Les Paul put it when hearing Django Reinhardt for the first time “I might as well be shining shoes”

I guess our real talents lie in composition, programming & production – In bringing it all together and making it sound good. I compose the tracks and do all of the programming and Elliot takes the traditional producer’s role in that he makes the calls, gets the musicians in the studio and records any other parts we need, then its back over to me for the final editing/mixing. The system works because we always come to every step of the project with fresh ears and never get too bogged down. It also means we get to play with lots of tech and have a studio each!!

Tell us about your labels : Jalapeno Records and the newest one Pedigree Cuts ? Was it important for you to have your own label ?

I don’t think an act like skeewiff could ever have made it without it being supported by its own label. Period. A lot of the time labels need to be able to pigeonhole what you do so as to be able to sell you to press/radio/festivals etc. They need to know if Skeewiff would qualify for the Breaks chart, the late night jazz show or the House tent. Skeewiff never really fitted. Anywhere. We never really sounded like anyone else on the label either, so it made the job of the label nigh on impossible. Labels need to be known for a particular sound – like Motown, Blue Note or Ninja. When their stuff comes on – you just know who it is immediately. I guess skeewiff delivering a whole bunch of genre-mashes just confused matters, so deals with FSUK, Wonderboy & Warners were short-lived. We soon realised that if we were going to survive we would have to do it all by ourselves.

So from the ashes of a major record deal – Jalapeno was born, where we lived happily until a few years back when changes in the record industry as a whole meant we had to re-think the whole label ethos yet again. We started Pedigree Cuts in 2008, a new digital hybrid label that gives artists complete artistic freedom, gets the music to the fans, and looks to alternative ways of monetisation. Pedigree is a perfect fit for Skeewiff as it allows us to do whatever we like (and as much as we like) without financial burdens. Nice. Time for that Fidget-Polka album we always wanted to do.. just kidding ;)

How would you describe your music ?

Haha.. good one. I don’t think there is one overriding genre that you could say fits it all. There’s a bit of everything we love I suppose.. Hip hop, Exotica, Funk, Swing, Acid, Cha-Cha-Chas, Breaks, Spy Jazz, Soul.. You name it – chances are theres a skeewiff track that has a nod to it :)

If we’re just talking words.. El reckons its Bombastic, and for me its Jovial. So there you have it.. Bombastic-Jovial. No doubt in iTunes, we come under “Rock” haha

What is Electro Swing for you ?

All my christmases at once. I am an ardent Jazz and Swing lover as I believe its one of the greatest forms of dance music there has ever been. Rhythm is everything, and those records had it in abundance. Then theres the musicians: Those 30s cats sure knew how to play! Who wouldn’t want to have licks from Count Basie, The Duke or Tommy Dorsey’s band in their tracks?

I also feel as if I am offering a service. An electro-swing track is part restoration, not just another remix. A lot of those incredible tracks could have been forgotten or disappeared over time as the masters were recorded in mono with a very limited frequency and dynamic range on shellac that degraded after the first few plays. i.e. they sound poo. Which doesn’t cut the mustard nowadays, but that doesn’t mean that the music isn’t absolutely killer! By refreshing old masterpieces, it gets the tracks out there and being enjoyed by a whole new generation.. and that is precisely what skeewiff is all about..

When re-rubbing something from that era, I always do noise reduction, then master the recording to bring out the lead instruments or voice, and then myself and Elliot set out on replaying some of the parts, so we can bring the recording bang up to date. Naturally some skeewiff-isms may slip into the process, but on the whole we try to preserve the essence and melody of the tune as much as possible. Just offering the original work up as contemporarily as possible.

In short.. Electro Swing is an excuse to crate-dig shellac, Remix all your favourite records, Sample whatever you like but most importantly SWING! As an added bonus you won’t wake up knee deep in injunctions either as the copyrights have expired! Happy Days!

How did “Electro-Swing & Gospel Breaks” album come about ?

We did the first track on the album, “Brother Noah”, way back in 2008. along with some of the other gospel tracks like “Don’t Rock the boat” & “Gospel Train”, but didn’t feel we wanted to do an entire album in this style, rather it was a nice vibe that perhaps could go on a skeewiff album. Sadly the tracks just didn’t fit on the “Breaks of the unexpected” album (they were almost too unexpected) so they were shelved alongside other Swing tracks like “Close Shave” & “Light Up”

We then were approached by the magnificent KPM to do a remix album so we literally dropped everything to do that. The dust settled on the whole project for a few months. But some of the tracks had been released on a Pedigree Cuts compilation, and continued support from some of the more discerning Swing Djs – notably the godfather himself Nick Hollywood, meant that the tracks built up a head of steam and more and more requests started coming in. It was time to finish the album, and the growth of Electro Swing as the party music of choice coincided perfectly.. New tracks like “Buffoon”, “Maple Leaf Rag”, “Two Guitars”, “Get the L on down the road” and “Up above my Head” were added and “ES&GB” album was born.

If you had to choose one – What Skeewiff track is your favourite ?

I simply cannot choose one overall, but from the Electro Swing album it would have to be “Maple Leaf Rag”. That was a true work of love. Similar to “comin’ home baby” it is a mash-up/re-rub of epic proportions. Its is constructed from recordings by different bands, across different continents, and in different eras. The original was written by Scott Joplin in 1899, and I used snippets from his pianola performance alongside recordings by four other big bands spanning from the 30s to the 50s.. so a new version was formed from stems recorded over a century, and an impossibly big big band! Particularly proud of having skeewiff’s name next to so many greats :)

What equipment do you use to produce cool tracks ? Back in 1998, what was different ?

We like to see our studios as a compilation of some of the best bits recording technology has come up with in the last 100 years. We still use real instruments and Analog outboard but do most of our tracking and programming work digitally in Logic Studio on the mac nowadays. Limitless audio tracks, Virtual instruments, a never ending array of plug ins and tools like flex-time are absolutely vital for our productions nowadays. Having said that we both have an obsession with all things vintage – so you’ll find valves, springs, plates and tape machines littered around the studios. Not to mention all the vintage compressors and limiters we use for beat squishing.

In terms of instruments we have a couple of Old Drum kits (A 1950s Ludwig and a 1960s Slingerland) a Hammond Organ, a Fender Rhodes, A Grand Piano, Congas, Bongos and more guitars than you can shake a stick at. Elliot still has a few analog synths kicking around and I’ve recently got into DIY circuit bent stuff for the more glitchy side of things. That amount of kit naturally needs quite a few microphones so we have built up quite the collection! The mic of choice this month is the all ribbon Coles 4038 as used by the BBC since the 50s!

Whats different? We had none of the above in the early days :) Just a computer (Atari ST1040), a sampler (AKAI S2000) and a few Roland synths (101, 303, Juno, JX8P). We just couldn’t record real instruments because no-one had the cash or space for a tape machine, so it was all midi and samples back then.. but over the years, we switched to PC and then to Mac and as Hard Disc recording took off we gradually amassed more and more kit. Still, learning to program beats and manipulate sounds across so many different types of machines, from hardware like Akais through to ataris, amigas, pcs and now macs has meant we both are pretty fluent if the dark arts of sequencing and sound manipulation.

What are your plans gentlemen, any cool release coming up ?

hehe.. as usual far too many. We are literally balancing a whole multitude of proverbial spinning plates. Without giving too many games away, we are putting the finishing touches to the next Skeewiff album “Man turns animal” : A traditional skeewiff album blended from the finest funk, exotica, breaks and jazz and some of the usual skee-suspects on there. We are also working on an album with the magnificent Vanessa Contenay Quinones for her Allez Pop Project which is a mix of 60s beat, yeye and french pop which is of course exactly our cup of tea. Not to mention that we have got yet another remix album on the boil… Lets put it this way – 2013 is gonna be a busy year!

Hello, can you introduce yourselves?

Watcha Clan, we’re a band, composed of Sista K-Lead vocal/dancing, Suprem Clem-programming/keyboard/sampling/accordeon, Nassim-Gumbri/guitar/vocal, and Matt-double bass/guitar. We begun with reggae, ragga, jungle in 2000. but it’s natural for us to find sound from all origins, it all really started in 2003 in north Africa- Algeria, were we met Nassim and met some musicians of every background. After 3 albums in Autoproduction and some travels in North-Africa, “Diaspora Hi-Fi” comes out In 2008 (our first album on Piranha Music from Berlin), and so our meeting with the German and East-European scene, really boosted our music and our choices. Balkan Qoulou is one of our tracks that marked us, its a Balkan/arabo/andalous influence, and it was remixed by quite a lot of people . We find the “Global Bass” scene in these countries is much more develloped than in France, and they really helped us being heard, and thats amazing, also all the dj’s playing/remixing us that helped us so much.

How do you define you’re music?

We call it “World & Bass”, a mix of traditional mediteranean music and modern electronic music (from Dnb, Hip-Hop to Dubstep), we want to urbanise the ethnic musics of these regions. Our thought is that these musics are made to live on, we want them to live on, not to be put in static museums of old intouchable stuff. Put them back in a live context, on the dancefloor, with big sound and rock energy. We like to notice, the things that are similar in all different backgrounds of mediterranean area, from Balkan, Spain, North of Africa, Turkey, Middle East… We Are One!

You’ve travelled a lot, anything to say about you’re voyage?

Yes we had a lot of great meetings, with great people and musicians. Maurice Medioni a piano legend, it was a really strong experience to cross his road, He’s 80 years old now, and still living his music to the full, a beautiful energy, and collaboration.
Merlin Shepperd the clarinetist is a wonderful souvenir too. Crossing roads with Transeglobal Underground, and Asian Dub Foundation really influenced us deeper in our style. Also the meeting with T.O.X the rappers from Oran, it’s crazy how they work out there. with nothing but they manage so much!! Also Medhi from Speed Caravan who plays the oud, a traditional instrument, but an electric version. All them featuring on Radio Babel. Also all the dj’s and producers we met on the road really inspired us.

Tonight you’re not playing as a group, but as Diaspora Sound System, tell us about this project?

Well we love to play as a group, but we need time of, and a different way of expressing ourselves. as a sound system, its easier, its another way of looking at it. just making people dance, and get to know us, our influences, the music we listen too. We have the freedom to choose when we play our gigs, and when we take time to work on projects and in the studio, and thats very important to us, that’s why we’re still independant.

What are you’re future projects?

Coming very soon somas remixes from Radio Babel. And right now we’re taking time in the studio, going off the gigs for a little while. we are on the verge of a new evolution in our music.

I have never met this gentleman in person, but I have been following his sounds for quite a while, and we have some good friends in common. I have knows his music since he started his label Tour Eiffel records, and he has produced some fresh and exciting music ever since. When he started to produce electro-swing, I knew it would be a blast !
Electro swing DJ’s all over the globe have been playing his songs, the newly released Junco Partner, No Swinggity, and the Prosschai remix that has ended up on every electro-swing compilation out there…to name only a few. They kill it on the dance floor every time! Let’s have a talk with this gentleman to learn a bit more about him.

Can you describe yourself? Who is Minimatic?

41 yo, bald. First name Pascal, and it’s not fabulously interesting.

When did you start to make music? What is your musical adventure ?

I started drumming alone in my basement around the age of 12. Then, a few years later, I joined a band as a keyboard player (what a pity, they already had a drummer…). Since then, I have always played keyboard as if I were a drummer…

I got my first sampler in 1986, and did a lot of pop and electronic experiments.
Minimatic as a musical project (and an alias) seriously began around 2004.

I imagine you as a big fan of cinema from the 60′s, pop culture, arts… You have as well some different names as  Boogalox, Brother Moulinex, Monsieur  Sonotone… Tell us more about your cultural influences, what do you really get into ?

I grew up in Nice (French Riviera), during the beginning of the 70′s : so you can easily imagine why I’m so influenced by the aesthetic, cinematic & design of this period (space age, plastic age)…I love these parts as much the sound as the music of this period, it is all totally linked altogether.

Besides that, I have always been balancing the passion for rhythm, the essence of the groove that irrigates swing, jazz, soul, funk, and on the other hand, the power of harmony in music (Bach, Mendelssohn, Shostakovitch, Satie, Reich, Pärt, Morricone…)

Music is an infinite play ground. I don’t care about the frontiers of styles, genres, or fashion. I just love any music with a strong taste, a great style, and a deep soul.

I discover your work with the remix you made of Serge Gainsbourg’s song «  Chez les Yé-Yé «. I have always been a huge fan of Serge, but I never really liked remixes and covers of his work, but you came out with a really hot remix of that song. Can you tell us more about this remix you did? Did you get some good feedback from Charlotte, Lulu …. ?

This track was actually the “mother of all” Tour Eiffel Records releases… I used to play the original Gainsbourg’s “Chez les ye-ye” track for so many years, fantastic groove with just 3 perfect parts : double bass (phenomenal Michel Gaudry), guitar (Elec Bacsik at its best), and the voice and cynical words of Serge. I always had in mind a fantasy as if it was a “rough “demo version, and that I would someday love to be the Gainsbourg’s arranger, and make a re-instrumentation of it. At the same time I had never heard a satisfying remix of Serge (except “”Aeroplanes version by Readymade in 2001), all other remixes, in my eyes, never brought any value to the work of Serge…

So it was a challenge, to try to “explode” the track, make it more dancy, organic, percussive, vintage, and modern at the same time… After a bunch of Bourbon & Gingers, I got into a kind of hysterical trance editing and slicing the track, then recorded the organ parts, another bass, various percussions, the Brazilian samples, and so on all in one night. It captured the energy of that night as I was totally sweaty and excited. I always kept in mind that the phantom of Serge was somewhere in a corner of the studio, watching me, and what I was doing to his track…

When I released this first 7″, the feedback of all the DJs was really incredible : mods, 60s people, jazz, pop, funk, soul, house & hip-hop DJs, (even Gilles Peterson played it several times), all these guys played this track in a simple happy way. As for the “family” no news from Charlotte or Lulu : the Gainsbourgs don’t really have the time to listen to simple remixes of Serge, the only important thing for me was to make the remix deserving of him…

You released some big tunes in electro swing and I think it really grew your global audience. What do you think about the electro swing scene ?

Ha-ha-ha… Thanks for the compliment, though I am not sure if these are such “big” tunes. But yes, you’re right, the electro-swing scene is an incredible amplifier these days! I really did experienced that change. Actually, my music always had a touch of swing in it connected with jazz sounds & beats.

I have always had great feedback from DJs & musicians, even though it is quite complicated to classify my music. I am still producing funk, bossa, & soul based tracks, even nu-disco things, or more soul-folk ufo styles (my next album) as I can’t help myself but go in all directions…

When I really began to produce something purely “electro-swing”, then it boosted my visibility more clearly for the “generalpublic”. Then I started working with ChinChin Records, who is a very solid partner, and more importantly, very cool people !

This scene is so alive, multiplying & mutating all the time. This scene came originally from the swing-house era, and then, it brought in so many different influences in the Burlesque explosion (lately arrived in France, as usual…). For me the future of this scene is now more around swing-hop artists, who really give an incredible new & fresh blood to it.

You are the owner of your label Tour Eiffel Records. What is the next project with this? Are you looking for new artists in this label?

I never know in advance what’s going be the next Tour Eiffel Records’ release, I’m totally in a spontaneous mood with it. No strategy, no plan. The only thing is to make good tracks, that make me or my little daughters dance & smile at home, make a cool sleevefor it, and then to release it. I’m alone, doing everything from the idea to the final distribution, so it’s a simply craft way of working.

That’s probably why I’ve never seriously thought about releasing other artists, it is too much work to do everything. But maybe in a not so far future, because of cool guys that I really love, there may be a surprise in 2013…

Who are your favorite swing artists? Old or new?

Argh, big question… I would say 1000 names, both new and old, but you’ll need too many web pages to publish it !

So just 2 names among others : Louis Jordan is an all-time old fave, and new talented guys that I really like are Savages y Suefo.

I don’t like to play sets of 100% swing house linear mid-tempo, or on the contrary, play only swing hop with low tempo as I love to shake the people up! The cool thing is to find incredibly different tempos to bring dancers from smooth & sexy swing sounds, to absolutely mad demented uptempo, and so on. That’s exactly why I LOVE the electro-swing audience, and what I love to do in my DJ sets !

What is your next project?

My next big project (around others), is a full album, with a singer girl that I have liked for years… It will be a real two-sided project, probably not only under the name of Minimatic. I can’t really explain the musical style, but it will be beautiful and powerful. I am so excited about it!

Hello Dimaa, could you introduce yourself and your music ?

Hi, I’m a composer / programmer on MAO, from «l’ Isere » (south of Grenoble in the French Alps. I’ve been passionate about music as long as I can remember and I started composing around 10 years ago. Initially beat, hip hop and reggae until recently when I fell in love with electro swing.

What is electro swing for you ?

I think that, above all, jazz was a true source of joy for me. For a long time I composed a lot of dark themes before jazz came into my life. To start with, mainly gypsy style music through which I felt a sens of joy that no other music had brought me before. Sanseverino said ” « swing » is the only music that brings me as much energy as rock’and roll”. Although I never really listen to rock I share his idea. There are loads of energy to give and take in this music.
For me music is like a line through time. Over different eras all the artists have brought their own contribution to this line, however we all follow the trace of the line.
I mean that the sounds we « compose » today, were already « around » before us. Electro swing is a good example and I like the idea that we pursue the work that others started 80 years ago.
Today we can create freely but it hasn’t always been that way for example during the prohibition. Things may be easier today but the need to feel joy still remains. For me « swing » is a window to joy.

How do you work ?

I’m not going to reveal my secrets to you ! No just kidding. I work quite simply, I don’t have a lot of material, essentially my computer a mixer and master keyboard. I don’t always work the same way but most of the time, I start by composing a theme (piano, bass, drums, guitar …) then I include voice or real sounding instrumentals. I try to cut up the samples to use every note and recreate the original melodies, to me « sauce ».

You’re also a member of the group « Amuzgeule » (appetiser) Tell us about it. What does being a member of the group as well as a producer bring in you’re music ?

I joined Lamuzgueule earlier this year and our musical worlds immediately bonded. To start with we worked on 1 song, then a 2nd, a 3rd, so gradually I became part of the group. We’re working on lots of projects together, especially a composition for the end of the year. Lamuzgeule is a group of 7 energetic musicians who released an album last june “Radio Beret and disco zina” and are already working on a next one.
I get a lot out of working with them primarily the human relationships and sharing music. And of course, there’s the instrumental dimension. Composing music on the computer, knowing that musicians will be playing it on real instruments adds enormous potential. The « colour » of real instruments is hard to pefect on a machine. They also make suggestions add their own personal touch which I like.

Your future projects ?

Well the biggest project is my album which is scheduled for October 2013. An electro swing album which will be titled “Vagabond”, involving several other musicians. I’ve been working on it for a few weeks now. I’m also working on several other projects with DJs and various compos should see the light by the end of the year, especially ones under a label, but it’s a little too early to talk about yet. And to conclude I’m putting together a « set » so hope to be producing on stage soon.

I was asked to put something chill and sexy together for a Mischief/PLF speakeasy style after party in DC. I worked in some gentle wubwubs, glitchy swing, house, garage, dancehall, synthie stuff, shiny bass and generally stuff that is relevant to my interests. This is my first recorded mix ever so there’s some wonky mixes and even a sudden BPM drop to keep you on your toes. If this gets a good response despite its blemishes, I’ll clean this up, so let me know!

Behind the decks, Reverend D. is always trying to mix oldies to his Hip Hop and Breaks influences, building some cinematic atmosphere, quality selections and unusual grooves.

If you decide to check and follow Reverend D. on his you will realize that I used 2 mixes he did to create a longer one. What is Electro Swing for you ?

For me it’s a way to go back to the oldies – the Jazz geniuses I love from Dizzy to Count Basie – and make a dancefloor move (again) with. As a DJ, the pleasure (and the challenge) is coming when you try to travel between different beats, influences or breaks, which is fully possible with Electro Swing, somewhere between Hip Hop, Jazz and Electro.

Anybody who already heard me playing knows that I’ll always try to mix different kind of music and put some old stuffs as soon as I can on my sets, I mean why should I play a shitty remix of Benny Goodman’s « Sing Sing Sing » when I can play the original track and make people crazy with it ?

The Beginning: The two brothers Johan and Anders started to make music in their hometown Luela, far up in the northern part of Sweden. Their first EP was released under the name “Planeten Jorden” (Planet Earth) and the style was acoustic hip hop and reggae. Johan was responsible for the lyrics and Anders was the DJ and Producer and played also several instruments.

The duo turned into a trio when the Rensfeldt-Brothers were joined by Joakim Nilsson saxophone player . They started touring in Sweden from festival to festival. It was at an after-party to one of these festivals, that they discovered the swing. All three were dancing as the DJ started to play “Sing Sing Sing” by Benny Goodman. This incident inspired the three to take a new direction using drums and horns like in the swing era. They started to work on their album “Appleknyckarjazz”. They worked together with dozens of musicians to create this new sound. During this period (three years) they changed also their name to “MOVITS”.

The Breakthrough:
2008 the MOVITS were invited to a TV-show in the United States. Stephen Colbert has seen a video of the band in the internet and invited them to be featured in his show the “Colbert Report”. After that, their music went high up in the U.S.- charts – that was the beginning of their worldwide success.

The Language:
The Movits never thought about an international career, when it happened it happened despite the fact that they are singing in Swedish. So there is no need to change to English.

The Production:
Johan is responsible for all the lyrics. His brother Anders does the beats and the musical arrangement assisted by Joakim. The ideas are produced as drafts with midi plugins on a computer. When this is done they invite friends and musicians of the local scene to replace all midi tracks with real played instruments – they never have used samples. Therefore their sound is very organic.

The Live Set Up:
When playing live they have a quite minimalistic set up. There’s no computer on stage! Only a DJ gear consisting of two CD-Players and the DJ-mixing console, a drumpad, three microphones, the sax and sometimes a guitar. Anders is playing the tracks from CD, adding some live drumming on the pads, Joakim plays the Sax – both are doing also the background vocals. Johan sings and rapswith a very energetic vibe -that’s it and it works perfect!!! Sometimes they add guest musicians to their live shows.

Movits and Electroswing:
The Movits never thought about which genre their music belongs to. Their roots are definitly in hip hop. In fact they were quite suprised when they were asked to be part of an electroswing compilation. That was the first time they heard about this genre! But to be labeled as electroswing makes things easier for bookings or to explain their music. It’s great for them to be part of an emerging movement.

The Styling:
It’s important to be properly dressed for the occasion – their music has reminiscences to ballroom music. Therefore also their styling is quite elegant with bow ties, white shirts and the characteristic glasses. It’s a good thing to establish also an optical trademark and it makes things easier because you don’t have to think every time what you’ll wear on stage.

After talking with me, they dressed up and rocked the house! The crowd in Vienna went mad and all together (musicians and audience) were enjoying themselves!!! What a great evening!!!

Can you describe yourself ? Who is Lazlo ?

I’m a 27 years old music producer based in Marseille, France. Lazlo is the electro swing and vintage sounded side of my music production. I took this name out of Casablanca’s (movie) character Victor Lazlo.

When did you start to make music ? What is your musical adventure ?

I started to make music when I was fourteen and first heard Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album, then I took guitar lessons for two years, I also tried bass, harmonica and piano. I started composing on my computer (six years ago) using Reason.

What did your parents listen too when you was young ?

The music my parents were listening when I was young is the music that made my passion for it. My mother mostly listened to classical music, jazz and folk so she introduced me to Bach, Mozart, Ella Fitzgerald, Cat Stevens and America; my father, while he was listening quite the same music as my mother, he introduced me to rock, reggae and french song so I’ve been rocked with Bob Marley, Dire Straits and Georges Brassens. These musics have been the roots of my musical journey; that’s why, when I got older, I digged pop/rock, jazz, reggae and classical music discovering Queen, Pink floyd, Deep Purple, the Beatles then later the swing of Django Reinhardt, Benny Goodman, the reggae of Ernest Ranglin and Ken Boothe. Then I got into Blues music, funk and soul and as I growed I opened to hiphop and electronic musics.

What kind of jazz fan are you ? who is your jazz favorite artist ?

There’s two jazz style I particularly like: the first one is rather groovy, soul and funky (Donald Byrd, Charlie Rouse, Billy Cobham, George Benson..) the other one and I guess my favourite so far is the swing jazz and all the forms it took over the years; making a list of my swing jazz favorites would be too long so I’ll just say that Django Reinhardt and Glenn Miller were the ones that opened me to swing music and Benny Goodman and Bille Holiday conitued my jazz learning giving me some of the best musical times I had so far.

What do you think about the electro swing scene ?

I guess the electro swing scene is wonderful, personnaly it gave me the opportunity to express myself melting these infuences I cherish with today’s way of sounding. The scene has an incredible diverity, that’s what i like the most concerning e-swing, you can go from hiphop to techno, from minimal house to dubstep; you can sound electronic or almost 100% acoustic. The music offers a very wide range of possibilities that no other musical style can give. And I guess the e-swing scene is like this, very eclectic, versatile and inventive as can be using new ways of interpreting vintage sounds, that’s why it’s growing bigger and bigger.

How do you make music ? What kind of machine or software do you use ?

I make my music using mainly my computer. I also use some instruments such as my guitar and bass. I don’t have any machines except a midi keyboard and a soundcard. I use Ableton Live.

What is the process to create a song ? from sample ? a melody ? a beat ?….

The process is never quite the same. It often starts from a sample but this sample is only a starting point, very often the first sample is not even on the final track. Mostly my inspiration comes from listening to hundreds of tunes from all kinds of style and picking here and there some ideas.
Sometimes I pick a beat that I find interesting, inventive or just very efficient, then I reproduce it and make it evolve in the way I like it to sound to fit the style I want the track to be. Sometimes I notice a melody or a chords grid and take it as a start for a tune. There’s not only one way for me to create sound, sometime I just want a tune with a certain instrument or a certain mood, then I use my little fingers and try to compose the tune that’s in my head.
The most important thing for me is to have a reference, I know it may sound a little backward-looking but my music has always something to refer to, especially when I make e-swing, the music I love the most definitely comes from the past and for me, making sound is sharing the music you love with the largest possible audience.

Can you describe how to you get signed with ChinChin records ?

One of the best label in jazz and electro swing sound.
I contacted Chinchin very easily by sending a mail to their contact mailbox with 5 tracks of mine, they mailed me back a few days after asking me if I wanted to do an album. I sent my demo to several labels but I’m very glad ChinChin was the first to reply ’cause as you said, it’s one of the most influencial label in jazz & e-swing with artists such as Club des Belugas and Tape Five; it really is an honnor for me to be part of their family now :)

Can you tell us more about your first album ?

This album is quite the same as my vision of the e-swing scene, even if it’s mainly influenced by the minimal house and the vintage swing I love, it browses diverse musical genres being not only electro, not only swing music, at some point it goes Ska, hip hop, even disco :)
The aim of this album is to make people dance, have a good time sharing with them my love for that music.

What is your next project ?

The next step will sure be to make my music evolve, I’ll keep on using vintage sounds but I may want to explore other genres I like such as blues, rock, funk or soul in an electronic and joyful way; I also have a side project with my musical mate N’to who’s a very influencial French minimal techno producer. We’ve known each other for ten years and made our musical adventure together, so now we want to make some kind of electro acoustic music, a music halfway between his love for electro and mine for organic sounds.

Can you tell us about what music do you really like now or old tunes you love ?
It’s impossible to say which old tune I like unless we take all the night and as many beers to dicuss it, so my “coup de coeur” will go to Pretty Lights and their remix of John Denver’s “Country roads” that I can’t stop listening for one week, these days I also fell in love with Roysopp’s “This space”.

What is Electro Swing for you ?

For me electro-swing is less of a musical genre than a style or theme that runs through an increasing number of other other modern genres. My mixes and live sets incorporate the classic sounds of the 20′s and 30′s but contrast them sharply against wobbly basslines found in anything from DnB to ghettofunk and everything inbetween. The enthusiasm people have at electro-swing events is unparalleled in the way that ravers dress up especially and fully submerge themselves in the full flavour of swing decadence. These are truly exciting times for electro-swing.

Can you describe us Who are Smokey Joe and the kid ?

Smokey Joe and the kid is duo of producers. We ‘ve been working together for the past two years now. We ‘ve known each other for a long time and we have our own record label, Banzai Lab Records in Bordeaux.
-Smokey: Basically, I’m a big smoker so Smokey came naturally ! Also it refers to a Jazz legend. Senbei got the name of The Kid in another project, so he kept it. We are huge fan of hip hop and Jazz, so we decided that the 30’s sound would be great to sample. We are working on songs for our first album that will be released this year and we had the chance to collaborate with few artists. We just had the opportunity to work in Montreal, Canada, and we met some great mc’s there. We recorded a track with Random Recipe and are going to work with Waahli from Nomadic Massive.

How did your project started ?

It was one year and half ago, we didn’t know about the electro-swing scene but we wanted to do a special 30’s night. Our music is really hype and dancefloor friendly, so we got this idea to dress as the swing era. The concept was born.

What kind of jazz fan are you ?

The Kid: I really love the classics like Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey and Louis Prima. I’m also a fan of all the cartoon’s music from that period.
Smokey Joe: Music was always around me, my mother was a pianist and my father a drummer in a speakeasy jazz bar. When I was young, I grew up with the music of Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and so many great jazz artists.

What do you think about the electro swing scene ?

We don’t belong to this movement, we are really on the Hip hop side. We like it though, it’s part of the new musical current. Now, there are two huge scenes in Europe, Dubstep and electro-swing and believe me, it’s nice cause it’s completely different ambiance.
In our style, basically people want to have fun and party. It’s so much fun to travel with this music! The sound of the 30’s is perfect to dance and to be a little crazy!

Can you explain your success? Also tell us what was the reaction of the Montreal crowd?

I think the success is not there yet, this scene is still pretty small, we are confident that for those who never heard that style, who love either Hip hop or swing, will definitely like that blend. We had a lot of fun at Igloofest, the crowd was really great.
The only festival in Canada outside in winter, imagine -20 degrees!

How do you make music ?

We exchange some tracks and add more things to it. We start sometimes with a sample, a bpm i want to use or a beat I like. Sometimes even two jazz samples work really well together and then we had a third element. We work on laptops and when we go live, we play with MPC, turntables and midi controller.

What is the next project for Smokey Joe and the kid ?

We’ve played in Montreal and New York, now, we’re going back to Europe and we will play in Berlin, and then we will go with Generals Elecktrics for their French tour.
Our first E.P will be out in April and the full album will be launched around September. We will have great collaborations on it.

I have been DJ’n for 17 years and have played mostly all forms of House music.  I recently discovered Electro-Swing and have become very inspired to incorporate it into my music. I have released 3 EPs of mostly Electro House and I am currently working on my 4th which will incorp this new Electro-Swing Sound !

What is Electro Swing for you ?

Electro-swing for me is combining the deep Jackin House sound of Chicago with the Swing and Jazz sounds of early 20th century American Jazz and Swing that I like to call Jack’n Jazz.  I believe this combination pays tribute to the old Jazz Legends as well as the Legends of the original underground House Scene of Chicago in the 1980′s.

It’s positive music that makes you want to dance, breaks the barriers of genres and seduces listeners of all ages using warm, classy sounds with a vintage feel and polishing them with a new feel. In the same way that swing music was a way for people to break the race and culture barrier in the 30s and 40s, today electro swing gets people who wouldn’t usually be in the same club to happily share the dancefloor. My favorite part about it: it puts a big smile on my face !

My real name is Jason Osborne, I go by J-Roc from Sould Out Djs which is a dj duo consisting of myself and my soul bro Jeremie a.k.a. Dj Deliverance. I travel a lot but I reside in Edmonton Alberta which is where I sit in my studio 24/7

I just released 2 EP’s and Im wrapping up 2 more this week and then I’m deciding whether I should release them on my own label which is in the making called “Sould Out Records” or ship them out to the labels Im already on.

Hello Jem, how did this electro-swing vibe appeal to you ?

I stumbled into it by complete accident – in 2008 my wife Mischa and I made an animation – Teleparp ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtvxPQilEIk ) giving the look and soundtrack a very ’20s-version-of-technology vibe.  I thought I was being very original sticking my love of ragtime into a house beat!  Not long after I was at The Glade festival (DJing as Bush Doctors – my project with Rennie Pilgrem) and very late one night I stumbled into a tent playing exactly the kind of music I’d just made for our film!  I loved what I was hearing and seeing – a live band with beats (Swing Zazoo), acrobatics and crazy costumes – I’d found a new spiritual home !

Can you introduce yourself and your work in a few words ?

Of my several musical projects, the stuff I do as Jem Stone is more of a funky-jazzy-dubby vibe – the last two EPs on Freshly Squeezed have had loads of swing in there but I enjoy doing all sorts really, from disco to hip-hop to very chill stuff.  For many years it was all about housey funk-fuelled breaks, as one half of Soul of Man and our label Finger Lickin’ Records but my influences have always been quite varied. But generally it’s all about the groove for me …

As we can see you’re quite a polyvalent artist, in all crafts, you have this simplicity for mixing tracks that can be more hip-hop, or very dancefloor, you also do you’re videos, and you’re artwork, can you tell us about this ?

I’ve always been into mixing media as much as possible – I went to art school many years ago doing a degree in graphics and animation and during that time got really into recording and jamming.  At the time I was a bit tortured trying to work out which road to go down as I loved both sides but couldn’t see how to combine them.  It wasn’t till we started Finger Lickin’ a few years later where I was able to fuse both passions together – making music, making the sleeves, making projections and videos etc.  So now I can’t separate it …  I’m lucky also to be married to a very talented animator !

Can you tell us about you’re future projects ?

Well there’s lots going on this year, with a load more stomping music coming via Freshly Squeezed, with some surprising angles and exciting and unexpected collaborations …  I’ll be giving out more free chunky bootlegs via my Facebook page, and I’ll be taking on a few more AV gigs here and there … Got some cheeky things up my sleeve I’m very excited about but you’ll have to wait and find out !

Is there anything you’d like to add ?

For me Electro swing is all about bringing back fun and a real groove back to dance music. Electro Swing is underground but is loved by people from all walks of life. It brings back dancing to dance music.

What is Electro Swing for you ?

Electro Swing to me “appears” to be a very contemporary modern movement that embraces and incorporates the music & culture from old swing & jazz. I’ve never attended an electro-swing event so I can’t say for sure.  Hopefully that will change one day.

What is Jackin House for you ?

Gladly! Jackin House is without a doubt the most underground & under-appreciated style of house music particularly because so much of it is sample based.  It’s been around since the early 90′s.  It’s a very raw Chicago sound in origin.  Producers like Paul Johnson, Stacy Kidd, Gene Farris, Sneak, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Rhythm, Derrick Carter, Cajmere, & Gant Garrard were some of the original Chicago cats that helped define the sound.  It had more of a edge, energy, & attitude to it than regular house (which is what drove me to it) and the tempos tended to be a bit faster.  Then in the mid 90′s a whole slew of French producers like Sebastien Leger, DJ Nekbath, DJ Falcon, Drexxel, Twin Pitch, Mike 303, Daft Punk, Cassius, etc…, who admired the Chicago cats, took that raw Chicago sound and added a whole new layer of production to it and evolved it.  Many referred to it as Filtered Disco or Filtered French House.  Lots of compression & filtering but the sampling aspect remained intact.  Then in the late 90′s the sound came back to the states (the French sound ended up losing it’s edge and went more big room, electro, and tech) and was redefined by guys like Joey Youngman, Jason Hodges, Sound Republic, 1200 Warriors, James Curd, Derrick Carter, Sneak, Hector Moralez, Phil Weeks, & Mark Farina.  It went through a phase were a lot of it was referred to as boompty for a bit (a term I think Derrick Carter applied to it but don’t hold me to that).  There was even a close cousin for a minute called Fidget being pushed by Chicago guys like Santiago & Bushido, Sexual Chocolate, & James Amato but much like the French stuff it ended up moving too far toward the more electronic sounds, particularly Electro, and the connection was lost. In it’s current state, the purest form is a very uptempo (126-130 bpm) style with a lot of shuffle & skip in the percussion (borrowed from the garage styles of guys like Todd Edwards) with the trademark chopped disco/jazz/hip-hop/swing samples over the top.  You also have producers like Inland Knights, Joshua Heath, Jonn Hawley, Wally Callerio, DJ Mes, Sonny Fodera, Scott Diaz, Lawnchair Generals, Natural Rhythm, Random Soul, Camouflage, etc… that are fusing elements of Jackin’ House with deeper & more traditional styles of House Music.  Many of them doing it without the use of samples which is exciting and should help legitimize things further.  The style has been growing with a huge influx of artists and labels since it’s inception and I don’t see that slowing down anytime soon.  Unlike other styles of House Jackin’ has much broader barriers and is much more free to experiment with it’s sound.  Also, it doesn’t take itself as serious as other forms of House thus you don’t find that level of pretentiousness and ego that is so prevalent elsewhere. It’s a very close-knit community and everyone seems to genuinely like each other and help each other out.  If you aren’t familiar with the sound, some newer producers worth checking out include JR From Dallas, Frankie J, Chemars, Wattie Green, Jackin Box, Scrubfish, Nate Laurence, Kid Enigma, & Jeremy Joshua.  Jackin’ House = House Music with SWAGGER!!!

Owner of Cabbie Hat Recordings, co-owner of the house label Juiced Records and producing under the names of 4Peace, High Maintenance (with J Caprice) and now Soulmates (with girlfriend Camille) plus with remixes for the likes of Wattie Green and a role as the Traxsource chart compiler and jackin referral point it has been a very busy and in demand 2011 for Matt.

The year began with the set up of Cabbie Hat Recordings, Matt’s idea and vision for swing house releases.  The label has grown and continued to grab the attention with a string of swing infused samplers showcasing the work of the talented swing house producers in USA.

As 4Peace and Soulmates Matt has released tracks via Cabbie this year. His swing house sound can be heard from over a few years now via Juiced Records, the label jointly run with J Caprice. Interestingly, as youll find out, it is their fault the phenomenon that is Wattie Green came to the attention of the world.

Rooted firmly in the swing house sound it is evident to us this has been fused to electroswing in Europe, whereas in USA it seems to be treated more as straight up house.

As Electro Swingers we know the scene is varied and encompassing. If you had to give it a name then Matt’s sounds and releases would be coined ‘Jackin’.  To me though its simply outstanding!

Many thanks and continued success to Matt on all his projects, he never been to Europe so any promoters reading this, don’t think just book, as 2012 could take off and you read it here first ;)

Matt, what’s your take on Electro Swing?

You know what’s funny is that I’m not totally even sure what it is!  lol!   From the best I can tell, it’s a very progressive, multi-faceted, ever-evolving genre that seems to encompass a wide range of styles & tempos with the common themes being the use of old jazz/swing elements with at least some inclusion of electronica?  It also “appears” to be largely a European phenomenon?  I could be completely wrong about this, I’m not sure, so please pardon my ignorance. Most of the stuff that I hear that makes it over here is more of the peak time housier stuff like DJ Mibor which I like.  It’s very “polished” and “big”.  Very well produced.  Having said that, some of what I’ve heard is a bit “too clean” or “too eccentric/abstract” for my tastes as I prefer things a little more raw and for my purposes, to rest comfortably within the funky confines of chicago style house music.  A lot of it I wouldn’t neccessarily play, but I still dig it and would listen to it in my car, particularly some of the slower tempo stuff.  Just had an electro-swing compilation go up on Traxsource this week and a few of the down tempo cuts made their way into my cart.

What’s happening with Electro Swing in USA?

That is a good question and you’ll have to pardon my ignorance again.  I think I’ve seen an event or two promoted over on the West Coast but I’m not certain.  This is what I was referring to in the first question.  It appears to be largely a European movement and style.  Either that or I’m just completely out of the loop.  Over here, “swing house” and “electro swing” exists as two completely different entities with very few overlapping artists.  If there are events going on over here, I don’t know about them.  If there are, I wish I did.  They look crazy fun!

Have you always had a love of jazz/swing music and if so where did this come from?

I wouldn’t say I’ve “always” had a love of jazz & swing, at least not in the beginning.  I wasn’t that aware of it initially.  I was a hip-hop fanatic first going back to about 1984 during my middle school years.  Here I am this white kid from Texas.  Grew up in the cowboy mecca of the South known as Fort Worth (also referred to as cowtown) and went to a huge high school that had 3000 students of who MAYBE five of them were African-American.  Our freakin’ mascot was the confederate flag (not joking).  I was like the only white kid in this massive all-white high school that was listening to hip-hop.  All my friends would be sitting around in their pickup trucks listening to Country or Heavy Metal and here I come rolling up in my black convertible blaring Morris Day, Prince, Whodini, or Big Daddy Kane.  My dad was a huge Blues fan and was always listening to B.B. King, Eric Clapton, & Ray Charles.  That had to be what planted the seed.  It wasn’t until later when I got interested in House Music around 1989 that my interest was piqued and I started working my way backward and my interest and research in jazz, swing, & blues really began to develop.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey through Juiced Records, 4Peace, High Maintenance and Cabbie?

Oh boy, I’ll keep this short as possible.  Here’s the cliffs notes version.

Went off to college in 1988 and heard “electronica” for the first time at a fraternity rush party.  Stuff like Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Depeche Mode, Yazz, etc…  I got wind of a record store in Dallas called Oaklawn Records and in October of 1989 when I walked through their doors for the first time, my life changed forever and I’ve been a DJ ever since.
No idea how I came up with the 4peace name.  It wasn’t anything profound and has no deep meaning.  It actually fits me better now than it did then as I’ve become increasingly interested and involved in humanitarian causes.  To be honest, I didn’t really like it and have even tried to change it a few times but everyone still called me 4peace so I eventually just went with it.  Under that name I became one of the more prominent & infamous DJ’s in DFW (due to my very outspoken and confrontational nature) and have performed at more raves and clubs around the region than I could possibly ever recall.  I didn’t start producing until late in the game though.

In 2008 while surfing on myspace I ran across this cat named J. Caprice who I noticed had a few tracks on some labels I liked.  It wasn’t until later I realized he literally lived less than a mile from me so we hooked up and started working on beats under the name High Maintenance.  We did a swing house track called “The Shuffle” that got signed to Footwear that did really well.  Then we did 3 more swing tracks that originally James Curd offered to sign to G-Swing but we were anxious new producers getting hounded by labels left & right who wanted the release.  We weren’t in a contractual obligation yet so in a hasty decision, we pulled it and gave it to Germany’s Digi Funk who has said they’d put it out immediately.  Looking back I wish we had waited it out as G-Swing was my favorite label of all time and I think we burned a bridge (sorry James).  Having said that, Digi Funk did us right.  One of the tracks on the EP, “Who’s The Man”, went crazy and became our signature track and is what really put us on the map.  Even years later, people still bring it up in conversation & often play it if they see me walk into a club or join an internet radio chat room.  From there, things just got crazier and we had more labels asking us for music than we could write.  They all wanted the swing stuff too but we didn’t want to pigeonhole ourselves so we held off and made an effort to diversify our sound.

Our label Juiced music came about after we realized how shady most labels are and decided we’d rather put our best stuff out on our own label to ensure we saw an honest return.  The label has been a success and swing has played a big part in that.  It all started when J Caprice happen to run across this completely unknown producer from Tennessee in a chat room on a swing music site.  He sent us 12 tracks.  I remember when we first listened to them our collective jaws hit the floor.  This was swing like neither of us had heard it before.  We knew we had something special and signed every single track.  His name was Wattie Green.  :)  We really owe a lot to Wattie as it was the success of his early tracks that helped propel Juiced into the worldwide spotlight.  Sometimes you just get lucky and find that golden ticket.

I established Cabbie Hat in 2011 and I’ll expound on it more in your next question.

Cabbie is the latest label and seems more dedicated to swing, was that the purpose of setting it up?

Cabbie Hat is solely my label and the sound is definitely more focused.  I’ve always been deeply touched by music that was rooted in black culture and that of course includes but isn’t limited to Jazz, Swing, Blues, Funk, Hip-Hop, & RnB.  You can feel the passion, the pain, the pride, the attitude, the realness, the soul, & the history that just exudes from every note and every vocal that you just don’t hear in most white rooted music.  It’s these styles you’ll hear overwhelmingly & consistently on the label.

Any new names to the scene worth keeping an eye out for?

Well, most Jackin guys don’t just do swing house.  Swing just happens to be one of the styles they occasionally weave into jackin.  That said, Dan Warby is a new name who is doing some sick stuff with jazz & swing.  He just had a release on J. Caprice’s label HARD.  Expect to see something from him on Cabbie in the near future.  Also have some swingin heat coming down the pipe from an artist called Stranger Danger.  Of course anything in the jazz realm that guys like Wattie Green, Tommy Largo, Jeff Dougler & Balu, JR From Dallas, South Of Roosevelt, or Scrubfish touch is gold.  If you haven’t checked into a cat named Precious Roy’s stuff, do yourself a favor and peep it.  Guy’s a genius and molds jazz/swing with jack, minimal and techno.  None of them are limited to this sound by any means but they all have a wonderful ear, understanding, education, & appreciation for the sound that shines through when they decide to undertake it.    Lately I’ve really been keen on producers who are infusing a raw hip-hop vibe in their sound.  Cats like Nick Jagger, Kid Enigma, & the mighty 1200 Warriors are really doin’ it for me right now.

Jackin swing seems big in US with Wattie Green, South Of Roosevelt, Jeff Dougler, yourself and so many more. What’s it in the water over there? :)

I wish it was big!  lol!  It is growing though.  The number of producers and labels has nearly tripled since I started producing 4 years ago.  I think that 90′s swing house movement that got so big for a minute really influenced a lot of cats.  I know it did me.  I own every single g-swing release on vinyl except #6 I think?  Speaking for Wattie.  That dude lives it!  I’ve stayed with him twice over in Nashville and been privy to late night bluegrass jam sessions in his kitchen with his friends and roomates.  That dude is so uber talented and can play so many instruments it’s retarded.  It was really a pleasure working with him on the single “Digga Digga Do” that came out on Cabbie and we are at some point planning to follow that very successful collaboration up with a full EP.  I’ll keep you informed on that.  Jeff Dougler & Balu live in Canada so they don’t count!  Haha!  Just kidding.  Those guys are also amazingly talented and put such a fresh spin on an old sound.  The SOR cats from Chicago have deep roots in jazz so that all plays into it.  One of the best things is that all the guys, in addition to being extremely talented, are really cool down to earth cats who are a pleasure to work with and be around.  No fronts, no attitudes, just real salt of the earth people and I look forward every year when we all get to come together at the same time in South Beach for WMC! They all have a genuine appreciation and love for the music and will sit around for hours talking about it.  Having said all this, Swing House seems to be a love it or loathe it kinda deal with most people.  I’ve always said hating on Swing is like hating on a kitten. You may say you do but you really don’t. Behind close doors they both make you smile!  Cats will often say they love jazz but don’t like swing?  Swing is jazz, just in a more structured and danceable form. Swing is all about having fun and gettin’ high!  It oozes style, exudes attitude, infuses humor & wit, and even has a dark side.  Do I even need to mention how ridiculously danceable it is?  What’s there not to like?  If I owned an upright bass I think I’d sleep with it in my bed.  Swing was the hip-hop of it’s day.  It’s dancers were the original b-boys & b-girls!  Cab Calloway was hands down the coolest mother fucker to ever walk the planet!  No matter what you do in life you’ll never even come close to being as cool as him!   They broke the mold when he passed and I keep a framed picture of him right above my studio monitors for inspiration. Jazz, Swing, Blues, Hip-Hop, etc.. are all from the same womb and very closely connected.  I say to dislike one is to dislike them all.

Is the jackin sound played/suited more in house clubs or within the electro swing scene?

Definitely the house clubs, although I’m sure if there is an electro-swing scene here in the U.S., they might incorporate some of the jackin swing stuff but probably not so much the other way around.  The clubs I go to and the internet radio stations I listen to, you don’t really ever hear anything that would be considered electro-swing, just straight up swing house.  I have a feeling some of it may get played at the larger events & festivals, but those aren’t my scene so I couldn’t say.

You been to Europe?

Not yet.  Had a couple sniffs but nothing ever materialized. I’m making my first trip overseas in December to perform alongside my beautiful & talented girlfriend Camille under our Soulmates production moniker at a couple of gigs in New Zealand (look for our first release under Soulmates on Cabbie Hat in December).  Hopefully I’ll make it over to Europe one day.  I’d love to throw down for a crowd that is salivating to hear some jazz & swing!

Hello Guys, can you shortly introduce 11 Acorn Lane to our electro-swing.com readers ?

11 Acorn Lane is us, Neal Pawley and Thomas Feurer making music together. We’ve been releasing music as 11 Acorn Lane since 2008 and it’s been a fun and crazy journey so far.
We met here in New York where we both live. Neal is originally from England and Thomas from Switzerland.

Would you say you belong to the Electro Swing family ? Living in NYC, can you tell us about the scene over there ?

We love Electro Swing! Some of our tracks seem to musically overlap and have been well received with fans of Electro Swing. We weren’t aware of the whole movement until relatively recently but we think it’s absolutely fantastic and would be honored to be considered a small, small part of it.
We are not really part of any particular scene over here in the United States, but we feel like the Electro Swing scene is definitely much stronger in Europe and we are very excited about all the cool music we are hearing from Europe.

You’re releasing a New Album this week. Most of the tracks have been released previously.
Why this album ? New takes, new edits, new mixing ? Did you want to add a swing flavor to it ?

‘Swing Thing’ is a “best of” type album. It’s our 5th full-length release and it includes two new tracks alongside a selection of favorites from our previous records.
The feedback from our hardcore fans has been great. They seem to love this particular collection of our songs. And for people who don’t know our music yet, it’s a great way to discover some of our favorite tracks all in one place.
Our music is quite eclectic and we love the freedom of combining all kinds of unexpected musical influences. It was a lot of fun selecting these songs and we are very happy with the flow on this album. People put it on and have a blast. It’s definitely a feel-good kind of record.

Each one of you is playing many instruments. Who’s dealing with the Electronic side of the production ? Did you get help from someone else ?

It’s all done by the two of us. We love bringing together live instruments with electronic elements and we both are into experimenting with different production techniques and are always searching for new interesting sounds and effects.

You’re music is heavily influenced by Funk and other Latin grooves. How would you describe it ?

We sometimes call it Novelty Lounge World Electro Pop. But it’s not easy for us to describe our music. We both have strong roots in Funk and Jazz. At the same time our musical background includes World, Electronica, Americana and Blues. We love music that marries multiple styles.
What we love about Lounge and House music is the open mind towards experimenting and doing unexpected things. We believe this openness is also what allows and facilitates the creation of amazing new styles, such as Electro Swing.

How do you play your music when you go live ?

Ideally we would love to do it with an augmented Big Band and a couple of DJs, but for now that’s just a dream. In the studio we obviously have endless possibilites and an almost endless track count. Narrowing this down for live situations has been difficult for us. So in the meantime we are still trying to figure out what might be a feasible yet artistically satisfying scenario.

What’s the next step for you ? Any Gigs in the USA ? Any chance to see you on tour in Europe ?

We don’t have any appearances scheduled in Europe. At the moment we are busy promoting ‘Swing Thing’ and also our album ‘Happy Holy Days’ that features our versions of Christmas and Holiday classics.

What is Electro Swing/ Ghetto Swing for you ?

Electro swing or Ghetto swing as we’ve so humbly labeled it, is a merging of music styles including but not isolated to, Swing, Jazz, Dixieland, Big Band and old Blues bedding down with the most recent of production methods and arriving at a sound that is: Fun but heavy, Full but dusty and clean but down right dirty. Borrowing bits from all the grandfather greats sounds is a great way to bring appreciation to what they did and maybe be a glimmer of hope in the effort to stare now-days popular music away from mainstream brain numbing bleakness.

Well music school,  i used to play bass, did some jazz, some funk, played in bands, then like anyone who goes to electro, got interested in machines, then played at gigs with a trumpetist, the singer, and Dj Ritch for the  turntablism and scratchs, now Sa Bat machines is either me or with musicians intervening depending on the  party.

How did you get to blend such different styles Dubstep/gipsy jazz?

We’ll accidentaly! my ex girlfriend Tamara szefer who sings on the track “Sylvia”, comes from a very acustic jazz background, so Hey! it’s an idea like an other, why not!! and thats very good, because there will be more. =)

What future projects?

We’ll my future projects, a maxi on the label Despub, a triple maxi on  Kiosk rec., a track on the Australian label Aqualize, a track for the compilation Generation Bass, and a project for the cinema coming out in February…..

I was a super realist painter for about 40 years until my ideas and eyes started to falter. This coincided with my daughters opening the Milgi Lounge and inviting me to do the daytime playlists, “Give the old boy something to do!”. The bar became a hub for Musicians and Artist living and passing through Cardiff. A couple of years ago the “Correspondents” happened to have stayed the night and were having breakfast down in the bar. Chatting they invited me to their gig and Wow!!! I had never seen a crowd so excited since standing outside the “Twisted Wheel” in Manchester waiting to get in for my weekly fix of Northern Soul back in the 60′s. I had been doing lots of original 30′s 40′s mixes for the Burlesque Girls but hearing the boys playing I started remixing the oldies which to my astonishment went down really well. As far as I’m concerned Electro Swing is the most exiting Genre of the present day and set to explode across the club floors if it has not already.

What is Electro Swing for you ?

Electroswing for me is the most exciting genre of the new millennium. It encapsulates a casting away of tribal attachment to genres very prevalent in my youth (born 1948). Electroswing  has even started to diversify into anything that lifts the spirit, Gospel, Western, Blues and anything those swingers come across. I just love the excitement of visiting my inbox and finding surprises. I love it!

It lifts your heart and spirits and that can only be a good thing. Long live Electro Swing! Enjoy.

How did you came to Electro Swing ? What is it for you and why do you like it ?

Electro Swing in London has one definition , 1920 to 1950 Remixed, simple, anything from crazy swing hip hop to breakbeat boogaloo, Cumbia remix even. I’m a nut for Vintage Remix , Ive been chasing it like a “chimera” for 20 years, programming anyone who remixed the old and new. In the start there were but a few bands and acts and then as you all know in the last few years its dripped into 20 bands and 100′s of dj’s. All with there own take. By the end of the year at least 700,000 will have watched our gigs and danced at around 40 gigs and festivals this year. Were very proud …

You’re running the Book Club in London. What is your audience ? How are the party like ?

Im an old geezer (guy), the area ES London happens is uber trendy and hip, we have been running everything from Punk Rock and Anarchist gigs in that area for years. We were lucky to get a club that is so phenomenally popular and is packed full of young people under 25 (but lots of old farts like me too). In two years it has never not been full or absolutely jumping . BUT what makes it so different is that we have to have a Live Electro Swing thing monthly , so we have had 24 electro swing live acts , which is a miracle as the venue is just beginning.

It might be the 1st club in the world started to play this Electro Swing music. When was that and how was it in the beginning ?

I used to run a thing called Lost Vagueness I was the programmer. It was a vast “town ” of crazy animations and rooms and begun this neo burlesque thing in the UK, we were for years banging out any old vintage remix, but ES London came of the back of a number of v cool Electro Swing tents at the festivals. In the beginning it was really hard one, you could hear, Caravan place 3 times in a night or Libella Swing, but now every Dj is different (Im often still playing the “classics” as Im quite lazy).

You’re celebrating the 2nd anniversary of the Club this weekend. Tell us about it.

Its a totally mental night as usual with artists coming from New York , the world Scratch Champions remixing swing , the originator of the UK Vintage Remix Tuesday Weld , Nick Hollywood of White mink and heap of other stuff.

I’m happy to present you this event. The 2nd Book Club anniversary  in London on the 19th of November 2011. This is where it all started in the UK and if you’re around you should go there to experience one of the best Electro Swing Party in the world.

Oh Yeah – ELECTRO SWING is 2 years old!
Its been an amazing, whirlwind couple of years. When we first did this event we were the first club in the world dedicated to Electro Swing, now there are literally hundreds. And everyday new mixes and mad new versions appear.
In the last 2 years we have never had anything but a storming night and a rammed house.
We launched with our good friends Freshly Squeezed whose White Mink: Black Cotton compilations are now the worlds biggest selling electro swing albums. We also say great thanks to our spiritual home and the faith they have shown at The Book Club. But the biggest thanks goes to all the people who have come back, time and again, put up with the queues and the crush and who have taken this vibe all round the world.

Can you talk to us about your musical background ?

You know we are sitting here in the park in front of this beautiful lake. So just the sound of a nature is a source of inspiration for me, not only the music. This is all music for me. I started to play piano when I was 6. My sister played piano too. My mother sang a lot. I was raised in a musical atmosphere.

When did you decide to make music ?

At first when I was young, I liked to play something, try some improvisation and play with the sound. Later, when I was fifteen, I started to make music with my computer. I was introduced to the music of ” The Prodigy “, the first album with all this drum and bass, and hip-hop stuff. I started to analyse a lot of music. I was really curious about how they produced it, and it sounded so far away . It was so intense. I like to fuse the electronic sound with the organic sound.

You are a really versatile producer : Balkan , electro swing, dancehall, dub … What do you prefer the most ?

I don’t think I prefer anything the most. What is touching me a lot is oriental music today. Just the last days or weeks I have been listening to a lot of Turkish music and Arabic music. I always feel it touches me. I feel I need to go to Istanbul.

What do you think about the new scene of electro swing ?

For my point of view it is nice to see how it developed. I put my attention to this music a long time ago. I could see maybe about 10 years ago people started to dj swing, but not only swing. When we played Balkan stuff we also played swing and manouche swing.I think the growth of the Balkan music helped to build the swing revival. People who make electronic music starts to sample everything : swing, Balkan…

What do you think about your first live tour in North America ?

It is really new for me and really exciting . I really enjoy the company of the band members and the feeling of the vibe on the tour. Bringing this music to the people is fun.

What is your next project ?

My next project is to make a cd for children with kids songs, but in a Dunkelbunt style with a lot of electronic and dubby stuff. This has been on my mind for a couple of months. I don’t think too much about my next album, I just give one minute everyday to think about it. I like to grow very slowly and very deeply. For the next album, I want to do something completely different from what I have already produced. I don’t want to repeat myself. When I m in the studio I always want to have be challenged. I have to learn something new. Singing a new way, playing a new instrument.

Can you explain to us your process of creating a song ?

Sometimes it is the duck. (laugh) like he is doing right now. I feel it is when I want to produce, using the sounds of the duck, and adding some effects to it can work. When I have a melody in my mind I can start from there, or I take samples from somewhere and I built an another picture around it. So every time it is different. Sometimes it begi

ns from the beat, sometimes it starts from a melody. Sometimes, I think about the fusion of the two, as I like to put a lot of different things together. I have a big relationship with sounds that have a picture, a color, a texture. For me every song and very key has a different color.

Did you listen a lot of music ? Or dig a lot of music ?

From 2001 I remember I downloaded my first mp3. I like to cook. I always joking about it. I would love to upload some samples of food to the people. I am a kid of the wild generation. I have access to music from all over the world with mp3s. I’m searching for music from many different countries : Turkey, Arabia, Serbia I have built up a large knowledge of music. I think this is really important for music to travel. Ok there is a part of it that is not legal, and the artist is losing a lot of money. You don’t have to spent money on producing music, you can just send it to your mailing list and hit the button and you know in 5 minutes 1000 people have this song. Everywhere in the planet from Australia to Canada. I also support the music when I am djing and I play wav. I don’t like to play mp3 because you the quality of the sound is not good. I want to support the people so I only use the wav.

I had the opportunity to make this interview in Lyon with Bart & Baker. That was on the 27th of October just before a show they were doing for Jazz Radio. I met them at their hotel and we had a chat for half an hour. I asked them questions to discover who they are : What is their background ? What is Electro Swing for them ? What were their projects ? and it helped me to understand who these music lovers were and how they were networking around the world to spread their music.

What is Electro Swing for you ?

Electro swing a way to find again the happiness of past decades with the madness of the electronic music of today.
What is similar between the 40′s and now is the Escape wanted by people who are astonished by the society surrounded them. The main difference is the way that they use to do it. The evolution of the music makes that the dancer are looking for different kind of rhythmic and background but still looking at the same time at the swing spirit.
There is not the “Electro Swing” because of globalization, Swing is picking the background of the electronic music scene of the countries where it’s produce.
So define Electro Swing is really hard, but to do it in an easy way, just say that Electro Swing is like a good meal, just have the good receipe : a bit of Basslines, a major amount of pure swing and few drums and that’s perfect

”We had already worked together for another project, as singer and sound engineer. We both left a sign in one another: Pisk was hit by Loredana’s voice, warm and sensual, as he calls it. Loredana was charmed by the passion and hard work “of a boy who never grows tired of entering the sound”.
Once they had known electro-swing it was easy to found the band Swingrowers: “We knew we could do beautiful things together in the music”.

Pisk was a well known electro dj in Palermo when he came in contact with electro-swing the first time in 2009 and he started remixing old swing tracks. Loredana sang in a big popular orchestra and she got to know elecro-swing in 2010, when she listened to an album from Caravan Palace, which she fell in love with. That’s when she decided to propose Pisk her project of putting an electro-swing band together. And that’s when Swingrowers were born!

Palermo’s music environment is very lively and heterogeneous: a lot of music genres is played, from rock to jazz to electronic and pop. There are thousands of new talented bands but it’s very hard for them to become well known because they are given a very few chances.
For example, we are finding way more chances around Europe than in our town, where you’re supposed to knock on every door, and most of them are hopelessly shut.
Palermo is an artistic town, but it lacks a proper network for music.

We compose in different ways. As for inedited tracks our standing point isn’t always the same, sometimes it’s the base, sometimes the lyrics, it depends on which one of us gets the idea first.
In some of our tracks we have used small samples from old discs, sometimes we like an old style track and we mix it all. In our productions we always try to experiment new sounds using different stiles. We are currently collaborating with Gipsy Hill from London and Sweet Life Society from Turin.

Our debut took place on the Hoppa Fest stage. Hoppa(www.hoppafest.com) is a festival, which is held every year around Palermo and hosts tons of local artists and international stars. After Hoppa we jumped only on small stages around Town, but recently we have been in tour outside Sicily: from Turin’s Swing Circus to Electro Swing Club, which was held in London’s Book Club, and is so far the performance that gave us the huge possibility to show ourselves our worth! People welcomed us with such a warmth and energy we never expected. In a few months our gigs have multiplied and new things are waiting: we’re going to tour around Europe, from U.K. to France, Germany and Belgium. Once we’ve crossed the Italian border, it was a gigantic emotion!

Cab:
Can you please give me a short biographical overview, especially concerning your musical experiences?

Per:
I was born in the northern part of Denmark. In the mid 90ties I moved to Aarhus and was the leadsinger in a heavy metal band. I soon discovered the possibilities of the computer and since then I have worked with electronic music in many genres. I have produced and written music for Aura (“I will love you monday”), Camille Jones (“The Creeps”), Kenneth Bager, Ida Corr and many others. I have released two albums as “Jazzbox” on “Music for Dreams” with electronic Jazz and a chillout album and several singles under the name “Gauzz”. I have done a lot of remixes under those names and they are on many compilations.

Cab:
When did you start to think about merging old swing with electronic beats?

Per:
I have always had a love for jazz. When I was young I wanted to play bass like Jaco Pastorius (he smiles) About 6 years ago I got a boxset with old jazz and swing from a friend. I took the tracks to my studio and just followed my intuition. I made them mostly for fun and because I really liked the positive energy and stunning musicianship. The sound of the old recordings is also fantastic. It holds so much history – swing was one of the first genres to be recorded. I liked the idea of combining the old with the new. I have always fusioned different genres and sounds.

Cab:
When did you start to produce /release electroswing tracks and what was the feedback?

Per:
When I started doing the merge of of old jazz and electronic music no one could really hear the potential except my publishers. They couldn’t get it signed to a label and got feedback like “Have you been smoking crack?”. So the tracks basically stayed in the drawer for several years.

Cab:
Is there an electroswing scene in denmark?

Per:
The electro scene in Denmark is very, very small with only a few DJ’s and sporadic small events. But hopefully it will grow here too.

Cab:
How did things change after you were signed by Freshly Squeezed Music

Per:
When I was signed to Freshly Squeezed everything changed. It is the right label for me and they are fantastic at this kind of music. The tracks came out of the drawer and were dusted of and new tracks were added to the album. “I’m Leaving”, “Peas and Rice” and “Together” are new productions. The rest of the tracks were basically released as I made them 6 years ago. Kind of weird. But the response has been great.

Cab:
What is your approach , how is your workflow when you produce an electroswing track

Per:
For me it is very important to find some original tracks that I really like. I listen to the melody, the recording and the lyrics. I have listened to thousands of tracks before picking the ones I have used. It takes a long time, but I really enjoy it.
Then I sync the tracks tempo and cut in the parts that I like. I sometimes use the whole track, but often I cut it up to make new melody structures and change the rythmic feel. I let the original track influence me and I never have a clear view of what the track should end up sounding like. That makes the process very enjoyable and I always try to have fun in the studio. If something doesn’t work, I abandon it and try something completely different. I am very good at “killing my darlings”.

Cab:
What hardware/software do you use for production?

Per:
I use Ableton Live. Its so fun and intuitive to use. I used Logic before and some of the tracks on the album were made with Logic.

Cab:
What are your experiences with sample-clearing or licencing the old recordings? (are you doing this yourself or ist done by your label?)

Per:
I leave it to my publishers.

Cab:
You seem to have lots of fun when you are performing live – when did you start to modify your productions for live-performance? What are your Experiences with your live-shows?

Per:
I make modifications to the tracks live and people can hear a slightly different sound and arrangement, than on the album. I really enjoy the live sets and its such a pleasure to have Karina Kappel with me on stage. She is a fantastic talented singer and really adds something new and vibrant to the tracks. We have a lot of fun and its always exciting to see how people react to the music. We want to do our part in making a fun, happy and special party. We love it when people dance:-)

Cab:
What are your future plans?

Per:
I have just released an EP “The ballroom EP” with extended versions of selected tracks from the album. There will also be a little christmas thing out. Right now I am working on new original tracks with Karina Kappel where we don’t use old samples, but try to make our own sound. It’s going really well and hopefully you will hear the results in the beginning of the new year. I will still do tracks with old samples, but focus now is on creating a modern electronic swing sound with lots of inspiration from old swing jazz.

Paris, France, 02 October 2006. This day not only saw the culmination of a project to spruce old jazz swing music by including electronic elements to each track.  The process involved the arduous task of seeking clearance for around 200 original swing tracks to remix plus the usual stumbling blocks.

So while the 02 October 2006 may have been the result of all this graft, it was the release date for the album G-Swing – ‘Swing For Modern Clubbing’ and saw the successful conclusion to their notion…….for the rest of the world it had brought the reality that quality, swing tinged house tracks with substance works and we now got something to go on here.

www.electro-swing.com is happy to show you what followed in the tale of a collective idea that produced the album that became the cornerstone of swing house music and re-wrote the rules on the creativity and production expected within the genre.

We are delighted to announce that in making this article possible we have interviewed one of the key men in the project, the swing house pioneer, the man who put the Greenskeepers into G, Mr G-Swing himself, James Curd.

James began Djing in his native Chicago when he was fifteen years old.

At the age of eighteen he had built up a music studio and began producing Chicago house and by nineteen released his first track on Romain Dupont and Etienne Mignard’s Paris based label Basenotic Records. Further communiques followed between them and from this meeting of America and Europe came an inspired plan to make an entire album infusing the old swing music and the modern sounds of Chicago house.

As James recounts ‘’I have a love for all kinds of music. Jazz was always playing in my first Chicago apartment. My roommate Jack was a Saxophone player and die hard jazz record collector. Every now and then I would hear a song or just a little piece of a song that I thought would be great in some of the songs I was producing and I would experiment by sampling them’’  There was now a purpose an ambition around the possibilities of a jazz swing house sound.

The name for this project between James and Romain led to the invention of the term G-Swing.  Some of James earlier releases had been under the name Greenskeepers, and this was used to form the new name, in essence G-Swing is short for Greenskeepers Swing.  The name would be used for the work produced by the artists on this album.

A record label was already established using the same name. G-Swing (the label) is currently a division of Basenotic and Greenskeepers Music, with James as label head. Both he and Romain work on the A&R side.

In their own words ‘G-Swing is a label dedicated to the Swing House sound’ and around 2002, James focussed firmly on the label and the swing house sound despite running two other, non swing, labels Igloo and Greenskeepers Music.

This was all four years before the release of ‘Swing For Modern Clubbing’ and in that time much work was being done to bring this concept of jazz swing and house beats to life.  As James tells ‘’My partner Romain and I were able to get around 200 swing songs cleared to remix. We sent them out to all of our G-Swing artists. Lindstrom and many others turned in some great mixes and then we released it. There was a lot of work involved. Romain, who also remixed a track, did an amazing job of pulling this altogether.’’

The G-Swing artist collective included  James Curd, Romain Dupont aka Romain BNO aka DJ Brame, Etienne Mignard aka Le Major Melon, Lindstrom, Ludovic Allen, Joakim aka Jimi Bazooka, Berry Dept, Marcovich and Itchy Mango.

Upon the release of ‘Swing For Modern Clubbing’ all the hard work had been realised and James realised ’’ I knew we were on to something fun and new.’’

‘’G-Swing was distributed in Paris and Romain reached out to some labels that he thought may be interested. Romain ran the day to day label duties for the Paris side of things and deserves tons of praise for his dealings for the compilation.’’

The album included tracks heavily plundered from the recognisable swing jazz standards of the big band era and included a weighted nod in particular to the works of Duke Ellington.

Track one, ‘Moon Indigo‘, was released by Duke in its original guise in 1930.  Most versions were slow paced, however, this one including Nina Simone on vocals is played in double time giving it dancier vibe.

Other Ellington connections are found in the tracks ‘Ring Dem Bells‘, ‘Diga Diga Doo‘, ‘Going Nuts’ and ‘Caravan’ which was composed by Ellington’s valve trombonist Juan Tizol.

‘Cement Mixer‘, track two, was originally recorded in 1946 by Charlie Barnet who had played the bells on Ellington’s ‘Ring Dem Bells’ some 16 years earlier.

Two of the tracks came from the ‘King of Swing’ Benny Goodman. ‘Sing Sing Sing‘, originally written by Louis Prima and the excellent ‘Don’t Be That Way’  where you can hear Chick Webb on drums.

Louis Jordan who played as part of Webb’s band, pops up on the Caribbean flavoured ‘Run Joe‘. And a final link to Chick Webb is in the track ‘Fig and Dates’ where you can hear Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Come On a My House‘.

The rest of the tracks include varying degrees of the fantastic original pieces with the up to date beats of a set of producers who kept the swing vibes going within their computer composed kicks, cymbals, hi-hats and synths.

The album gave a second wind to the swing house scene.  Better production and the creativity of the tracks led to a re-emergence of this style that would in time find itself under the umbrella of electroswing.

There had been a swing house scene prior to this album, a first wave, which originated from Chicago and indeed G-Swing the label saw it’s first release in 2002, with James in Greenskeepers mode.

His tracks ‘Dra Gan’ and ‘Keep Going’ were the B side on the vinyl to the tracks ‘Cool Down Daddy’ and ‘Swing In The Horns’ by Mike Dixon on the debut for G-Swing.

More followed from Greenskeepers, with ‘D.C. Minor, ‘Big Noise, ‘Video Days‘, ‘Auction Song’ ,‘Electro Swing‘, ‘Here It Is Babe‘, plus other releases from Mike Dixon (his output was almost as prolific as Greenskeepers), Dan X and Justin Long and Translucent,  however, the scene didn’t peak for long .  Looking back to those days James remembers ‘’I felt like there were too many DJ’s playing too much of it in one set. I think it hurt the first wave of swing house. In less then a year people were over exposed to it and I ended up playing less and less in my sets.‘

It’s been over five years since the release of ‘Swing For Modern Clubbing’  The G-Swing label has continued to bring us the best in swing house with the likes of Biboulakis and Enzo Siffredi, plus remixes from the likes of the mighty Wattie Green, however, releases by the G-Swing collective of remixers had gone quiet.

Great news greets us then that this is about to change. You may have noted the rumblings of something a few months ago on James’s Soundcloud page and he is eager to announce that he ‘’is back and I’m actually making vinyl. I’m trying to get a record out every 2 months. When I have enough new material I’ll do another G-Swing compilation’’

Needless to say that the remixes are also nice. Choosen producers are among the best in this Nu Swing Scene. The moombahton swing style Remix by Al Lindrums is really cool, you need to check that. It might be my favorite but take a look at the fantastic remix of “Pennies from heaven” by Savages y Suefo. You also will find a remix by Swing Republic, one of the most wanted producer on the scene. Well all the other tracks are nice so nothing to throw away in this Release.

Both terms are true here; Rube is once again ready to revolutionize electro swing. Inspired by the Swedish rapper Movits he has produced three tracks with a unique swing hop sound. Besides the instrumental title track, he is accompanied by Guante & See More Perspective on the track Shotgun Soliloquy and Rabbi Darkside on Pennies from heaven.

This mix was recorded in a single take, on September 21st 2010…. and has not been edited or mastered. therefore it’s not perfect, but it is fun and weird and a bit twisted too. Over the years I have been collecting an eclectic mix of dance music. The apex of this habit exploded at Burning Man 2010, DJ’ing atop The Janky Barge. (Saturday night for those that were there)
I wanted to recreate that set… I call it circus house and it’s inspired by the desert…

What is Electro Swing for you ?

For me, electro swing marries the earliest eras of classic dance music, with the newest sounds of the electronic movement. its futureistic nostalgica, new yet old, and makes everyone smile and move.

Real name : Georgi Varelis lives in Kassel, Germany. He’s a 20 years old student at university. For me he represents the new generation of DJ who really uses the new Dj tools at it’s best and has at the same time a real feeling with music. When I listen to his mix I imagine it could be a much older guy who already listened to many albums and different types of music. It reminds me the What is Jazz mix (ES050) by Osca that was really good too.

What is Electro Swing for you ?

Electro swing is for me the perfect combination of antiquated sounds with the structure of modern, danceable beats. I love the rythmic basslines with the weird trumpets and the old sketchy voices. It seems to fit even better together than Jonathon Frakes and his beard.

What is Tech Hoe for you ?

Tech Hoe is a self-made malapropism for my sets…. dunno, maybe because i like to play slow, melodic and kind of romantic tech house tracks trying to hook up with some hoes (what strangely enough never happens!).

I organize a monthly swing/electroswing evening at Ost Klub („Swing Swing Swing“ presented by Klub Shwing) but it’s not so easy to attract so many people and the budget is limited, but I think it’s getting better.
The nice thing ist hat all people who are into elctroswing (DJs , musicians, organizers) are collaborating. We are in contact and try to increase the networking. I’m quite confident that the things will get better!

I was telling you few weeks ago that Caravan Palace was working on a new album. In the meantime I was lucky to play with Zoé Colotis at the opening of the Electro Alternativ Festival in Toulouse, France. She did a great DJ set (yes she is a DJ too) and we spent a little time together with her and Kormac.

Well I just learned Caravan Palace was working on a new EP called “Clash” and that it would come out on the 3rd of October. So that’s quit soon : )

Enjoy this little teaser video revealing basslines and few parts of the track. I bet most of us are going to play that one during the winter : )

Hi Julian, about your question: yes! i’m one of the parov stelar band tour dj’s together with alexej ryba. It’s a very great pleasure to support the incredible band on there concerts. it is not only a very powerfull concert where i’m playing the warm up or the after show it’s an awseome time together with each from the band starting at the beginning – tourbus check in – to the end – tourbus check out – and the time in between the concerts.
i’m loving the band all together. they are stars on the floor but best friends behind. it’s a great big family!
we played a few times together in the past and this year parov ask me: “do you like playing on our greek tour next week?”
äh … what? what’s going on? can anybody wake me up? i thought it’s an amazing dream *g
took a big breath and said: YES!
in 1994 i began to play as a DJ in little club in my hometown. two years after i changed the venue and playing all genres from rock to funk for the amazing people in the best club in our area. it was a great time for about 10 years.
after the 10 years – my little daughter was born – i said: OK, it’s time to be a little bit quieter and use your tracks for private listening only.
But harry and marcus (parov stelar) brought me back to the turntables step by step. so i found my sound again and i’m very happy to know parov stelar and his band and all my friends.
Now i’m bigger in this business than before. as an DJ or in a DJ set with an awesome drummer or an incredible keyboarder.

That’s easy! or? i’m loving the real handmade emotional music from the past with his incredible big band sounds and funky part’s. it can be a slow track or a faster track but it’s always a happyness in each swing or jazz song! i’m loving it!

Born 1978 in Upperaustria´s Mühlviertel, I started to play music for dancers with 15. From the age of 17 to 28, a Club called the Almbar in Aigen-Schlägel, for up to 800 People, became kind of my homebase, twice a week.
I simply enjoy sharing music I adore, with people willing to dance. In the age of 21, I began aside of that, to work in raising the net of mobilphone, all over Austria and Germany. First as an engineer in constructions and meanwhile in managing projects. In the year 2005, my daughter was born and became the center of my life. Of course, music is a part of my daily life, but there was no more joy in having party, each weekend. First time I got in touch with Parov Stelar in 2008, at the Fest am Silbersee in Aigen, where I was asked to take care for all the equipement and Parov played with his band. At this time I was just working as a DJ for a few times each year. But by playing sometimes in Burns Bar in Rohrbach and getting in touch more and more, with all the people around the Parov Stelar Band, the flame for turntablalism started to raise again. Last year Parov asked me to join the Band as a Tour-DJ, so I first stepped into the Parov Stelar Tourbus, bringing us to Graz and three days later, I found myself on the way to greece. Being part of this band … äh family (i don’t playing any instrument but i’m learning the brass this time), is just like as cosy or as smooth, as eating cookies at grandma as a little boy with my whole family. Great!!! thx to Parov, Harry and “the family” for bringing me back to the roots!

Spitzin is actively DJing or as he prefers to say – selects the music – for more than 5 years already.
Everything started spinning in the infamous series of parties “Pump up the 90s” at Woo club in Vilnius, Lithuania. These parties dedicated to 90s rave-rage went on for about 4 years and were one of the most danceable nights at “Woo” yet pumped by pure nostalgia for the techno sound of early 90’s and spiced up with the most annoying hits of euro-dance.
The 90s mania spread and “Pump up the 90s” crew led by Spitzin were pumping the craze in mainly every club in Vilnius and other cities of Lithuania. These parties were true phenomena and the very key to starting dance mayhem anywhere – from underground clubs and unknown festivals to posh parties.
Another series of parties which Spitzin was involved in was called ‘Party Animal Party’. It was one of few dress-up parties in Lithuania based under the idea of furries movement. The parties were quite cosy and fun although they did not gain mainstream popularity.
After the 90s mania the rock’n’roll and swing era rolled in Spitzins DJing career. Vintage-swinging and rocking “In the Mood” (Woo club), “Padubaduba” (Gorky bar & club) and “Cotton Swing Club“ parties were born. These nights went on with a greater touch of fanciness and were very appreciated among vintage loving people.
As fancy and perky as he is, Spitzin is delightfully spinning Electro Swing, Swing Hop, Dancing Jazz, Rockabilly and Rock’n'roll records at the time.

What is Electro Swing for you ?

Electro swing for me is a really good groove + the romance of the black and white movies, which are somewhere in the brain of almost any person of our society. So to say simply – it is the remixed nostalgia and a will to believe in true love showed in old movies.

The Frohlocker have accrued from a periodical club session of the same name, which was brought to life in Kaiserslautern (Germany) in early 2006. By mixing a wide variety of groovy, breaky musical styles, they didn’t take much time to capture a key position among the local party culture, followed by bookings throughout Germany. With Deli-Kutt (Wuppertal), Dusty (Munich), Shazalakazoo (Belgrade), DJ Farrapo (Bologna) and Paul SG (Vienna) they also invited some special gems to their own club, which is filled to the max from month to month.
The wide variety of musical styles of the Frohlocker is reflected both in their productions and their DJ sets breaching gridlocked genres from. They devoted themselves to one main goal: transforming a colorful audience into enthusiastic dancers.

Living in Asheville NC has dramatically affected the music I play. Asheville, having a massive gypsy and circus culture, has been grooving to my Electro-Swing and Balkan Beat sets in smaller venues for about a year now. I’ve been labeled as “the most eccentric DJ in town”, which of course makes me most happy. At rare events I have been able to mix up my other musical passion – the jet set – blending Lounge offerings of the 50s with modern day takes on Go-Go, Exotica and Shubiya-Kei. Think of it as the world’s most perfect drunken cocktail lounge with a beat.

My DJ roots were set in Memphis TN in the early to late 90s – spinning at many a night clubs with more genres than a music store. I took a 10 year hiatus only to find I hadn’t gotten it out of my system yet.
